Warning! SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Peggy Carter’s Captain Britain, a.k.a. Captain Carter, makes her live-action debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and her origins have some times with Steve Rogers. Hayley Carter makes her live-action MCU return after appearing in Avengers: Endgame. This time, however, she plays a slightly different character than what she used to, as she now has her own superhero persona as Captain Carter.
Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) further explore the multiverse. Set after the events of the Infinity Saga, Doctor Strange 2 also features the debut of America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) who has a unique power to travel through multiple realities quite easily. This makes her Scarlet Witch’s (Elizabeth Olsen) target who is trying to move to a different reality where she can be with her sons.
Thanks to its core story, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness further explored the MCU’s burgeoning multiverse. Marvel Studios took advantage of the concept and used the sequel to introduce the franchise’s version of the Illuminati. This new team includes Peggy Carter’s Captain Britain.
Captain Britain’s Origins & Powers In Marvel Comics
Introduced in the Marvel Comics in 1976, Captain Britain was originally intended to be the British counterpart of Captain America, although his story is significantly different from Steve Rogers in the sense that his powers come from a more mystical source than scientific. Captain Britain, also known as Brian Braddock, was granted powers by the magician Merlyn and his daughter Roma following a near-fatal accident. Primarily, he functions as the defender of the British Isles and its people, although, he also serves as the defender of Earth-616 as part of the multiversal Captain Britain Corps. Initially, Captain Britain’s powers were activated upon rubbing the Amulet of Right which he wore around his neck. It transforms him from a mere mortal to a super-human with special powers. Eventually, however, his powers which included superhuman strength, durability, heightened reflexes, and the ability to fly, were all infused within him. More recently, Captain Britain’s powers became tied to his emotions.
The MCU has long been rumored to bring Captain Britain into the franchise. Avengers: Endgame even name-dropped Braddock which was interpreted as a set-up for his arrival. In this scenario, Peggy has essentially assumed the Captain Britain persona. Captain Carter’s role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a member of the Illuminati mirrors that of Braddock’s with the Captain Britain Corps.
Where’s Captain America In Doctor Strange 2? Why Peggy Got The Serum
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t give any information regarding the origins of Peggy Carter’s Captain Britain. Given the sheer number of the multiple realities, it’s possible that she’s from an entirely different reality than where the Illuminati is based. Marvel Studios has previously introduced this version of Peggy in Marvel’s What If…? In the Disney+ animated series, Steve Roger was initially chosen to receive the Super Soldier serum, but following a brief kerfuffle just before he was injected with it, Peggy volunteered to get it instead. Steve and Peggy, like in the Sacred Timeline, fell in love. Unfortunately, Peggy’s final mission mysteriously transported her to MCU circa 2012. In that story, Peggy and Steve remained separated until the end, although What If…? season 2 might reveal that Steve somehow also found his way into the future as teased in the season 1 finale.
How Powerful Is Captain Carter Compared To Captain America?
So far, Captain Carter has only appeared in Marvel’s What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Meanwhile, Steve Rogers’ Captain America was a staple all throughout the Infinity Saga. Given this, it’s difficult to gauge exactly who’s more powerful between them. That being said, based on her limited appearances in the MCU thus far, Captain Carter appears to be stronger than Steve’s version of Marvel’s Super-Soldier. In What If…? she was able to easily take a whole HYDRA cell down with little to no effort; she also pushed Shuma-Gorath back into its portal, which is no easy feat since it’s one of the most powerful mystical creatures in Marvel. In terms of hand-to-hand combat, Captain Carter also seems more capable when she went up against Batroc in the Disney+ series. In the Sacred Timeline, Steve had a more difficult time with the villain. Despite her brief stint as one of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ Illuminati members, Captain Carter held herself quite well against Scarlet Witch. She ultimately lost, but considering how powerful Wanda is, Peggy put up an admirable fight against her.
