Neymar slammed by fans for missing Pele’s funeral after emotional Instagram post
Neymar has been slammed for missing Brazil legend Pele's funeral after leaving an emotional Instagram post praising the fallen hero.
Pele died aged 82 last week after losing his battle with colon cancer. Doctors battled to save the legendary striker's life over the Christmas period, but he passed away due to multiple organ failure on December 29.
His funeral was held in Santos, Brazil, on Tuesday afternoon (January 3), and was attended by thousands of mourning fans who hailed him as "The King" during the emotional send-off. Brazil's president Lula da Silva was amongst the attendees who mourned as Pele's coffin was driven away on a firetruck outside the Urbano Caldeira stadium through the streets of Santos – but there was no sign of Neymar.

Neymar had missed Pele's funeral to train with Paris-Saint Germain and sent his father, Neymar Sr, to the service instead, but the swap wasn't good enough for fans and Brazilian media, who lambasted the PSG attacker for his absence. Neymar Sr tried to explain his son's no-show and said: "It is a sad moment for the family and for all of us.
"Today is to support the family, we have lost a lot. He inspired so many people and the sport, he got us here today. He has inspired all generations, he has always been a reference.
"That's why my son asked me to be here instead. To support the family. We know what it is to lose someone and we have not only lost an athlete, we have lost a citizen, the person Pele. No, Neymar is not going to come."

However, Brazil Urgente presenter Jose Luiz Datena was having none of it and fumed: "If Neymar wanted to be freed, he came.
"Neymar could very well have pressured PSG to come here. He has already pressed the club several times to come to parties, why not ask PSG to say goodbye to Pele? I think Neymar, as a Brazilian player, had an obligation to come and see Pele's coffin to say goodbye to him. It was important for Brazilian football."
Fans also shared their disdain over Neymar's absence on Twitter. One fan raged: "@neymarjr didn’t attend Pele’s funeral. What kind of respect is this?." Another user fumed: "Shame on Neymar … no @more respect from me. PELE the king RIP."
The fury aimed at Neymar comes after he left an emotional post on Instagram following the news of Pele's death, where he credited the icon – whose No10 shirt he now adorns and shares the same goal tally of 77 for Brazil – for turning football from a sport into art and entertainment. Neymar also hailed Pele for hoisting the image of Brazil and his race across the globe in the post.
He wrote: "Before Pelé, 10 was just a number. I’ve read this phrase somewhere, at some point in my life. But this sentence, beautiful, is incomplete. I would say before Pelé football was just a sport. Pelé has changed it all. He turned football into art, into entertainment He gave voice to the poor, to the blacks and especially: He gave visibility to Brazil. Soccer and Brazil have raised their status thanks to the King! He's gone but his magic remains. Pelé is FOREVER!!"
