‘Only north east sides bring support like this’

Newcastle fans are being praised for leaving Trafalgar Square “spotless” after thousands descending on the capital ahead of the club’s Carabao Cup final showdown on Sunday.

The Magpies will play their first major cup final in nearly 25 years at Wembley Stadium today, and fans were clearly in a mood to celebrate ahead of their teams’ clash with Manchester United.

Fans, many wearing the famous black and white striped shirts – were seen chanting and having a good time as they descended on the London hotspot and gathered around Nelson’s Column. Beers were sunk and the odd smoke bomb let off in the team’s colours.

The Carabao Cup final kicks off at 4.30pm.

The fans were joined Saturday by the club’s co-owners, Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben, with the former sharing a picture of the pair at the square on Twitter alongside the caption: “Toon army.”
