‘The Last of Us’ Star Storm Reid Reacts To Backlash Over Queer Relationship

Storm Reid is speaking up over the backlash over the queer relationship between her character Riley and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie, on HBO’s The Last of Us.

While the series experienced a bout of review bombing over a previous gay relationship on the show, the 19-year-old actress spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her own character’s relationship with Ellie that was the center of this weekend’s episode.

“Like Bella said when episode 3 came out: If you don’t like it, don’t watch,” Storm said matter of factly. “We are telling important stories. We’re telling stories of people’s experiences, and that’s what I live for.”

She added, That’s what makes good storytelling, because we are telling stories of people who are taking up space in the world.”

During the episode, fans watched as Riley spent what was her last day in Boston (and in human form) with Ellie at an abandoned mall. There, they spent some time on a carousel, a photo booth, the arcade, and the escalator, aka “moving stairs”. This all lead up to Ellie and Riley’s first kiss.

“It’s 2023. If you’re concerned about who I love, then I need you to get your priorities straight,” Storm added about those upset. “There’s so many other things to worry about in life. Why are you concerned that these young people — or anybody — love each other? Love is beautiful, and the fact that people have things to say about it, it’s just nonsense.”

She concluded, “I’m sure people are gonna have things to say…but I don’t care because I’m proud of what we did and I’m proud of the story that we told and I’m proud of the people that we’re representing.”

The Last of Us airs on Sundays on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.
