HBO's Batman Spinoff Series Casts Clancy Brown As Crime Boss

Clancy Brown has been cast in a recurring role for The Penguin, an upcoming spinoff series from HBO Max’s The Batman. Variety was first to report.

Brown will play Salvatore Maroni, a notorious crime boss in Gotham City. Maroni’s character was referenced several times in The Batman, and his arrest allowed for Carmine Falcone’s organization to rise. The role of Maroni has been previously portrayed on screen by David Zayas and Eric Roberts.

Brown is no stranger to the DC universe, having voiced supervillain Lex Luthor in animated projects and video games. He is also known for his roles in Dexter: New Blood and the film Promising Young Woman. Brown’s other performances include Thor: Ragnarok, The Shawshank Redemption, and Highlander. He will star in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4, which will open March 24.

The Penguin will consist of eight episodes and will continue the story of The Batman. It is set to take place in the immediate aftermath of the events of the film. The cast includes Colin Farrell, who will reprise his role as Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblepot, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell. Milioti will play Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone.

Lauren LeFranc serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner on The Penguin, while Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman, executive produces via 6th & Idaho. Dylan Clark and Craig Zobel are also executive producing. Zobel will direct the show’s first three episodes.
