Why Queenie Turns Against Grindelwald In Secrets Of Dumbledore

Warning: Spoilers for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

At the end of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Queenie Goldstein finally turned against the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald and reunited with her love, Jacob Kowalski, but her motivations were not always clear. Although both of them had other relationships, Queenie and Jacob’s love story was key to their character arcs throughout the Fantastic Beasts film series. However, their relationship faced difficulties since their meeting in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them due to Queenie being a witch and Jacob being a muggle.

Queenie and Jacob’s love faced its greatest test in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. While Queenie wanted to marry Jacob, he was worried that she would be arrested for their illegal relationship. Seeming to want Queenie on his side, Grindelwald used this conflict to his advantage. At his Paris rally, Grindelwald announced that witches and wizards could love whomever they wanted once Wizardkind ruled the world. Despite Jacob’s protests, Queenie believed and joined Grindelwald, leaving Jacob behind.

For the majority of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Queenie worked for Grindelwald. However, she turned against him and reunited with Jacob just before The Walk of the Qilin Ceremony to determine the next leader of the Wizarding World. With so many characters in The Secrets of Dumbledore, though, there was little time to fully explore what motivated Queenie to change sides again. Based on Grindelwald’s statements at the Paris rally and Queenie’s behavior throughout The Secrets of Dumbledore, Queenie turned against Grindelwald because he failed to fulfill his promises about both love and nonviolence.

The main reason Queenie changed sides in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was because she still loved Jacob. When Queenie originally joined Grindelwald, she did so because she thought he could give her a way to be with Jacob. However, during her time among Grindelwald’s forces, Queenie probably learned how Grindelwald and his followers actually viewed muggles. Although Grindelwald had stated at his rally in Fantastic Beasts 2 that he did not view muggles as less valuable than wizards, he made it clear in Fantastic Beasts 3 that he wanted to destroy the muggle world, which would include Jacob. Realizing that Grindelwald would not help her and Jacob be together, Queenie decided to turn on Grindelwald and help Jacob, who immediately accepted her back.

Additionally, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore highlighted how Grindelwald was far more violent than Queenie expected. When an Auror killed one of Grindelwald’s supporters at his rally, Grindelwald sent his audience home with the message, “it is not we [Grindelwald and his followers] who are violent.” Although Grindelwald began attacking the Aurors shortly after that, Queenie had already joined him and apparated away, so she missed seeing the massacre. Based on Queenie’s anxious and haggard appearance in The Secrets of Dumbledore, though, she soon learned of Grindelwald’s true nature. For example, she watched from the shadows in horror as Grindelwald killed the baby Qilin. Due to this, Queenie was mainly staying with Grindelwald out of fear. However, Queenie’s love for Jacob was greater than her fear of Grindelwald, pushing her to turn against him to protect Jacob in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
