Books, chocolate, and meals out are the top pick-me-up treats for young adults aged 18-24 – with those in this age range spending a whopping £681 a year on treating themselves.

Research, into 2,000 adults within this demographic, found they splash the cash on themselves as many as 51 times a year – more than any other age group – buying new make-up, jewellery, scented candles, or spa treatments.

Indulgent young adults also like to treat themselves to a takeaway, their favourite cocktail, or a fancy coffee or cake – with 37% saying this is all done in the name of self-care.

Other justifications for pampering themselves include having a good day (41%) or a bad day (26%).

And over half of those polled (57%) feel these pick-me-ups have the desired effect of making them feel better about themselves, with 39% feeling happier afterwards, and 14% feeling excited.

In contrast, those aged 55-64 years old treat themselves the least – a comparatively low 30 times annually, while also spending the lowest amount, £284.
