Director Patty Jenkins and Marvel boss Kevin Feige will no longer be working on their respective “Star Wars” movies in a galaxy far, far away.

Although Jenkins said that Lucasfilm’s “Rogue Squadron” was still in “active development” after the cancelation of “Wonder Woman 3,” it seems that the project is no longer going forward.

The last Star Wars movie that appeared in theaters was 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which wrapped up the nine-episode Skywalker Saga. Although Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced several new movie projects in 2020, none of them have come to fruition just yet.

A recent report by Variety revealed that Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron,” which was originally announced in December 2020, is no longer happening. Although the movie was scheduled for release in December 2023, it was pulled from the release schedule in September 2022.

Although a rep for Lucasfilm did not respond to a request for comment, sources with knowledge of the film’s production told Variety that the film is no longer in active development, despite Jenkins’ claims last December.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is also no longer working on his rumored “Star Wars” film as he devotes his time to the next phase of the Marvel franchise. The news of Feige creating his own Star Wars movie dates back to September 2019 along with speculation that he was next in line to replace Kathleen Kennedy as the President of Lucasfilm.

Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy On Hold Due To ‘Knives Out’ Commitment

Jenkins and Feige are not the only two filmmakers who were attached to a “Star Wars” project. “Knives Out” filmmaker Rian Johnson directed the controversial 2017 film “The Last Jedi.” Talks that he was going to create his own trilogy for the franchise started swirling a few months after the film’s release; however, it does not seem that the project has moved forward.

Johnson recently signed a lucrative deal with Netflix to create more “Knives Out” films and his Peacock series “Poker Face” starring Natasha Lyonne was just renewed for a second season. In May 2022, Kathleen Kennedy told Vanity Fair that the proposed trilogy has been on hold as Johnson works on his other commitments.

Taika Waititi’s Movie May Still Be In The Works… But The Script Isn’t Done

There is one glimmer of hope for “Star Wars” fans. Director Taika Waititi was first announced to be creating a new Star Wars movie alongside “Last Night in Soho” writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns on May 4, 2020.

Variety reported that the “Thor: Love and Thunder” director “continues to work” on his Star Wars script and will “most likely have a part in it as well.” Waititi received critical acclaim for his role as an imaginary Adolf Hitler in 2019’s Oscar-winning film “Jojo Rabbit.”

However, in the summer of 2022, Waititi told /Film that he hasn’t even completed the script yet and he is still “trying to come up with ideas” more than two years after the project was first announced.

“At the moment it’s just very early, because I … still haven’t even finished the script,” Waititi said at the time. “I’m still trying to come up with ideas and I’m mostly kind of in that part of the process where it’s still very kind of open.”

“And when I write, I kind of write every idea I’ve ever had and then start to kind of chisel it down into something,” he continued. “But I’m still throwing everything at the wall right now.”

However, in a separate interview with the New York Times, Waititi said that he is unsure that his film will even get made once he finishes it. “I’m trying to write the ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” he explained. “I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”

An untitled Star Wars film is currently on the schedule for 2025 at the earliest, but it remains to be seen if it will be Taika Waititi’s unfinished film or something else.

At least Star Wars fans have plenty of Disney+ series to look forward to, including “Ahsoka,” “The Acolyte,” “Skeleton Crew,” and the second season of “Andor.” Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” is currently streaming on Disney+.
