GB News launches ‘alternative Match of the Day’ but viewers ‘die from cringe’ in seconds

GB News have launched their own "alternative Match of the Day" but viewers "died from cringe" just seconds into the show.

Football fans were left with a watered down version of the BBC highlights show as the absence of a presenter, pundits, commentators and post-match interviews saw the broadcast last just 20 minutes. In a bid to fill the gap, GB News aired their own review of Saturday's action, starting with Bournemouth's surprise home win over Liverpool.

Describing the match, reporter Patrick Christys explained: "How on earth did Liverpool manage to stick seven past Manchester United and then lose to a team named after a fruit."

Christys went on to read out a series of stats from the match before discussing the key moments. Studio guests Aidan Magee and Mike Parry also reviewed the results with their own insights and opinions.

One clip which showed Parry attempting to describe Mohamed Salah's penalty miss for Liverpool against Bournemouth on Saturday drew particular ire from fans, – and one of his fellow pundits.

Christys, meanwhile, struggled with the show's big screen and at one stage suggested Lineker "might like Brighton because it's full of rainbow flags and woke people."

Viewers were less than impressed with the coverage, with one tweeting a gif that read: "Dies from cringe." Others commented on a clip from the show with their own thoughts on what they had watched.

One commented: "Jesus, this is so pathetic I could weep." Meanwhile, another disappointed viewer added: "Bit cringey this lads."

A third said: "Are you seriously pretending to be sports presenters now?" One more also wrote: "The absolute state of this, screams of people who call the game ‘footie’."

Saturday's Match of the Day had been thrown into chaos on Friday following the BBC's decision to take Gary Lineker off air following the backlash surrounding his social media activity.

Earlier in the week, the former England striker had compared Home Secretary Suella Braverman's new illegal immigration policy to those of Nazi Germany.

Pundits and commentators, including Ian Wright and Alan Shearer, later confirmed they would not be appearing on the show or other BBC programmes as a sign of solidarity with Lineker, prompting the cancellations of Football Focus and Final Score.

The Premier League also refused requests from the BBC for players and managers to be interviewed after Saturday's matches, resulting in a shorter edition of Match of the Day simply featuring the highlights of each match without commentary or reaction.
