Match of the Day gains 500,000 new viewers without Gary Lineker despite shortened show

Saturday night’s limited Match of the Day was watched by 2.6 million viewers, according to BBC News.

The football highlights programme was viewed by nearly half a million more than last Saturday’s show, which had an audience of 2.1 million, according to BARB overnight figures.

However, the show was radically different as it aired for only 20 minutes and did not include accompanying commentary or analysis from pundits or even its famous theme tune – instead broadcasting only short highlight clips of the day’s matches.

It comes after presenters withdrew from the show, including Ian Wright and Alan Shearer, in solidarity with Gary Lineker who was asked to step back from hosting MOTD by the BBC for comparing the language used to launch a new Government asylum seeker policy with 1930s Germany in a tweet.

Solidarity with Lineker spread further across BBC platforms, with Football Focus and Final Score also replaced on Saturday afternoon following boycotts from fellow BBC presenters, leaving football coverage all across the BBC severely reduced.

The drastically altered show was left unrecognisable from its usual running order with nothing but crowd noise to accommodate the slap-dash footage of yesterday’s six Premier League fixtures.

With Lineker off the air, the 62-year-old travelled to watch his beloved Leicester City in their 3-1 defeat at home to Chelsea, but unsurprisingly he wasn’t picked up by the BBC’s cameras despite the Foxes' defeat.

Next weekend’s billing of Match of the Day and Match of the Day 2 have seen Mark Chapman named as host, but it remains unclear how much difference a week can make to the show which seemingly can survive in the short term without its main anchor.

The alien showing will hopefully be a one off for everyone concerned with the programme, with those figures likely to be an interesting read next week once the novelty of an empty show ends
