Casemiro has been sent off for Manchester United against Southampton following a horror challenge.

The Red Devils midfielder had his studs up as he went in to try and win the ball off Saints star Charly Alcaraz. Referee Anthony Taylor initially brandished a yellow card for the foul.

But VAR suggested he go to the monitor for a second look, after which he upgraded the booking to a sending off. It's Casemiro's second red card of the season, with his first coming against Crystal Palace last month.

Erik ten Hag responded by sacrificing striker Wout Weghorst and replacing him with Scott McTominay.

United fans fumed on social media. One tweeted: "His leg slips off the ball. Never a red for Casemiro, robbery."

A second echoed: "Casemiro clearly slips off the ball, there was no malicious intent, the ref is a disgrace."

And Mark Goldbridge commented: "I saw three challenges on Chelsea yesterday 10x worse than Casemiro's. Never went to VAR. As soon as it's United it's straight there. No coincidence."

Despite his poor disciplinary record, Casemiro was never shown a straight red during his nine years at Real Madrid.

But he's now become the first player to receive two red cards in a single Premier League season for United since Nemanja Vidic in 2013-14, as per Opta.

He'll now be suspended for four games, rather than the usual three, as it's his second red of the campaign.

The Brazilian cut a distraught figure after learning of his dismissal, putting his head in his hands while fellow countryman Antony consoled him as he trudged off.

Soon after United fans were doubly annoyed when VAR failed to give them a penalty for a possible handball by Saints defender Armel Bella-Kotchap.
