Amazon has picked up the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader after it was scrapped by HBO Max last August. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report.

The animated series will comprise two seasons and is expected to be a new take on Bruce Timm’s 1990’s Batman: The Animated Series. The show’s creative team includes Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves, and the 10-episode first season is being run by comic book writer Ed Brubaker.

The project was originally ordered to series in May 2021, and when first announced, the series was described by Warner as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology” that will feature “sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”

The project was sold to Amazon by producer Warner Bros. Animation as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to monetize content by selling projects to third-party buyers. Other streaming services such as Netflix, Apple, and Hulu were also reportedly interested in the project.

The show’s move to Amazon is part of the effort by DC Studios to bring order to its properties, with bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran plotting a 10-year plan to tell a unified story across film, TV, gaming, and animation. This plan includes certain projects that will fall outside of that realm, such as Reeves’ The Batman Part II and HBO Max spinoff series The Penguin, as well as Caped Crusader, which will be distributed outside of the company.
