Thor: Love & Thunder Theory Reveals Loki's Weirdest Character Return

The Thor: Love and Thunder trailer promises a plethora of new challenges for Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and many are theorizing one of the strangest characters, who first appeared in Loki, will make an appearance. Thor is a unique Marvel property in that it has ready access to the MCU’s Earth setting in New York, space setting in Sakaar, and magical setting on Asgard. With these three settings, virtually anything is possible in Thor: Love and Thunder. Among these possibilities includes the appearance of a certain amphibious version of Thor.

Throg, the frog version of Thor, first appeared in The Mighty Thor comics, issue #364, wherein Loki turned Thor into a frog. This Frog Thor led other frog warriors into battle and even passed on some of his power to a human named Simon Walterson (a.k.a. the Mighty Throg), who was initially turned into the frog Puddlegup by a witch. Frog Thor made his first MCU appearance in the Disney+ show Loki. When the L1130 Loki variant (Tom Hiddleston) visits The Void outside of time in Loki season 1, episode 5, “Journey Into Mystery,” there is a brief glimpse of Frog Thor trapped inside a jar underground as he desperately tries to retrieve his Mjolnir, which is just outside of reach.

The Frog Thor theory (via Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki) explains that Thor: Love and Thunder will feature multiple variants of Thor, including Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and potentially Beta Ray Bill. As the MCU’s multiverse expands, it is likely that every hero’s variant storyline from the comics will be explored at some point. This fact, combined with the director’s (Taika Waititi) style of directing, paves the way for Frog Thor to make an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder. Including Frog Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder makes sense because he already appeared in Loki. Chris Hemsworth even voiced the frog version of Thor. The MCU had already dabbled with animal versions of their characters when they showed Loki teaming up with his Alligator variant in Loki, season 1, episode 5 “Journey Into Mystery,” so Thor is likely to do the same. There was even a cut scene from Loki season 1, episode 1, “Glorious Purpose,” wherein Frog Thor defeated Loki in a flashback, demonstrating more can be done with the character.

The MCU Phase 4 has expanded the multiverse and introduced its characters to variant versions of themselves. Loki met a plethora of his variants in the void outside of time. Spider-Man met his other cinematic variants in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness features both Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) facing off against their alteregos across various timelines. The precedent of variants set up in other MCU films and the multiple Thors featured in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer implies that Thor will be facing various versions of himself. Since Frog Thor has already made an appearance, it would make sense to include him among the Thor variants who appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor Love and Thunder‘s director Taika Waititi is also the perfect person to capitalize on the character of Frog Thor fully. Taika’s filmmaking style is characterized by wackiness, humor, and weirdness. Expanding upon Frog Thor’s character would be right in line with Taika’s offbeat creative interpretation of Thor. While Frog Thor doesn’t explicitly appear in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, the precedent set by the Loki show and the multiverse expansion in other MCU films imply that Frog Thor/Throg will arise in the film as a surprise cameo. With the previous inclusion of characters like Howard the Duck, Rocket Raccoon, and Alligator Loki, it makes sense that the next animal version of a hero to appear in the MCU is Frog Thor. Thor: Love and Thunder has many surprises in store, and on July 8th, audiences will discover if Frog Thor is among them.
