Paul Merson trolled after ‘game over’ comment in Spurs game comes back to haunt him

Premier League fans teased Paul Merson after Tottenham Hotspur let a 3-1 lead slip against Southampton, moments after he said “game over”.

Antonio Conte’s side looked to have secured a very important victory when they headed into the last 15 minutes with a 3-1 lead. When Jeff Stelling asked the Arsenal legend for an update on the score, Merson said it was “game over” at the St Mary’s Stadium.

Considering Southampton’s struggles, particularly at home, very few would have disagreed with Merson. However, Ruben Selles’ side dug deep and managed to drag their way back into the contest with a stunning final 15 minutes.

Tottenham forward Pedro Porro gave Spurs the lead on the stroke of half-time, before Che Adams netted an equaliser in the first minute of the second half. Spurs looked to have taken the game away from the South Coast side, after Harry Kane and Ivan Perisic found the back of the net.

However, Selles’ rejuvenated Saints showed their fortitude, as former Gunner Theo Walcott halved the deficit, before James Ward-Prowse netted a 96th minute penalty to earn his side a vital point.

While Merson would have taken great pleasure in seeing his former side’s fiercest rivals slip up against Southampton, the football world took even more happiness in mocking the ex-England international.

“Always good to wait for the final whistle before calling the game,” one fan laughed on social media. “How can you call a game with over 15 minutes left to play,” asked another bemused supporter.

“Or so he thought,” laughed an Arsenal fan before one other jubilant football supporter wrote, “famous last words”.

A very happy Saints fan told Merson to “hold that” before a self deprecating Tottenham fan tweeted, “they don’t know us at all do they?”
