Schitt’s Creek Creator Gives Hopeful Update on Movie Continuation

After the series completion in 2020, Dan Levy has shared his thoughts on returning to Schitt’s Creek for a movie. The series was given a heartfelt conclusion as each character seems to have a bright future ahead of them, contrasting their rough season 1 beginnings. While the finale was well received by viewers, interest in sequels and spin-offs has yet to cease as fans are desperate to see more from the Rose family and their friends.

Seeing such a high demand for more content, last year creator Levy (who also plays David Rose) teased the potential for a Schitt’s Creek movie. This left many fans hopeful that they would see more from this sitcom family, but Levy doesn’t take the decision lightly and was quick to say that he would only return if the right idea came along. The writer felt that the finale gave a beautiful ending to Schitt’s Creek and is apprehensive to go back without good reason.

Levy reiterated this during an interview with People, stating that he would only work on a Schitt’s Creek continuation if the story was right. This time around, the creator does appear much more optimistic about the idea, assuring fans that the cast and crew are all eager to work together again. Levy wants to respect the audience they’ve assembled by approaching a Schitt’s Creek movie with caution as he worries it may come off as a cash-grab. Read Levy’s full quote below:

My hope is that one day we can all get together. I see these people all the time. We’re in constant contact with each other. So the love is there. The desire to work together is there, and the desire to tell more stories is there. I think it just comes down to making sure that it’s the right story to tell. And I think we’re also proud of the work we did on Schitt’s. And when you end on such a high, it really forces you to think very carefully about what the next step is. Because whatever that is, is an extension of something that most people don’t have, don’t get to see in their life. And I really respect the audience in that thing. I think when you have an audience that’s paid attention to you for 80 episodes of a television show, the last thing you want is to put something out that makes them think this feels like a cash grab. And that’s not what we’re about. So TBD, but a TBD with an exclamation mark on the end.

Annie Murphy, who played Alexis Rose, is just as desperate as fans for the characters to return. In 2021, Murphy admitted to hounding Levy daily about a Schitt’s Creek movie. Some potential plot lines were even suggested by Murphy, like a story of David and Patrick (Noah Reid) adopting a child together following their wedding in the season 6 finale. Murphy says that she even jokingly bribed her co-star several times to get a movie in the works but, unfortunately, had no luck.

Even with the excellent ending that Schitt’s Creek was given, it’s exciting to see that Levy is apparently very enthusiastic to return. In the absence of new Schitt’s Creek ideas, the cast and crew took up new projects of their own. As both the Schitt’s Creek team and fans look forward to new content, hopefully, this break will give the writers a chance to look at the characters again with a fresh perspective, aiding them to develop new ideas. While this doesn’t bring fans much closer to an actual continuation of Schitt’s Creek, the creators are clearly taking this seriously which bodes well for the quality of any story continuation that audiences do see.
