10 Celebrities That Threw Shade At Other Celebrities During Award Shows

Just about anything can happen during award shows, from celebrities making their romance public like Don Toliver and Kali Uchis, respectively, to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock silly.

These award show mishaps were definitely WEIRD and will have your jaw on the floor, from shocking speeches to mumbled slip-ups.

1. Will Smith vs. Chris Rock

All stemming from Rock having Smith’s wife’s name in his mouth, the incident escalated after the King Richard actor struck the comedian when he made a G.I. Jane sequel joke relating to Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air then repeated, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth.” He stormed on stage shortly after and slapped the Grown Ups actor.

2. Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus

According to Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus is the one that has been talking crap about her to the press, so it warranted the iconic question: “Miley, what’s good?”

During the 2015 MTV VMAs, Minaj received her moon for Best Hip Hop Video for “Anaconda. She did her usual thank you’s and then turned to find Cyrus, saying, “Back to this bitch who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?”

The “Flowers” singer then responded, “We all do interviews. We all know how they manipulate shit.”

But we’ll never really know if Nicki was really angry.

3. Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift

Perhaps Kanye “Ye” West got his negative reputation at the 2009 MTV VMAs when he interrupted then-19-year-old Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech for Best Female Video “You Belong with Me.” The infamous interruption is one of the most-known pop culture moments in history.

“Yo, Taylor,” Ye said during the interruption. “I’m really happy for you. I’ma let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”

Beyoncé was nominated for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).”

4. Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors

Whether they intended to or not, Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors threw some light shade at Jamie Lee Curtis, and the Oscars in general, after their “Hey Auntie” comment for Angela Bassett lost Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Creed III duo made their stances clear when saying, “Hey, auntie, we love you,” while presenting the next award.

5. Katy Perry vs. Britney Spears

Katy Perry decided to go very low with a joke she tried to make on the Grammys red carpet in 2017. The “Dark Horse” singer sported a different hair color from the usual black hair. The blonde bob was the main topic of a question asked by Nancy O’Dell and Kevin Frazier.

Perry responded, “It’s the last color in the spectrum that I can do. I’ve done all of them, and the only thing left to do is shave my head, which I’m really saving for a public breakdown. I’m down for that,” seemingly making reference to Britney Spears’s infamous head shaving which was televised everywhere.

6. Taylor Swift vs. Harry Styles

Now, this speech wasn’t interrupted by anyone, just a diss to someone else. Taylor Swift seemingly dissed her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles during her VMAs speech in 2013.

After winning Best Female Video for “I Knew You Were Trouble,” the Anti-Hero singer thanked the man that inspired her song on stage, saying, “This is just awesome, I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I got one of these, thank you so much!”

She never said who it was about, but the MTV cameras zoomed in on One Direction to get reactions following the speech, which isn’t a coincidence following the singer and Harry Styles’s short relationship.

7. Fifth Harmony vs. Camila Cabello

There wasn’t a speech that needed to be said, instead a performance with a mannequin.

During a 2017 MTV VMA performance, Fifth Harmony took the stage without Camila Cabello following her exit from the group. Initially, the performance looked like there were five members of the group, which had the crowd in awe, but eventually, when the music picked up, the mannequin fell over. There were only four of them. If that isn’t shade toward a former band member, then what is?

8. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler vs. George Clooney

In an effort to give Amal Clooney a compliment, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler gave a backhanded one to George Clooney.

During the 2015 Golden Globes Awards monologue, Fey and Poehler were announcing the Lifetime Achievement Award for George Clooney when they were announcing everything Amal has achieved, yet her actor husband is getting the award.

Amal is a “human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, an adviser to Kofi Annan on Syria, and was appointed to a three-person commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip,” Fey said. “So tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.”

9. Suge Knight vs. P Diddy

The feud that plagued the hip-hop industry in the ’90s was between two coasts. The east and west coast feud stemmed from Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records. Suge Knight and Puff Daddy, formerly known as P Diddy, never got along, and their beef got very public when Suge dissed the Bad Boys record founder during an acceptance speech.

In 1995, at the Source Awards, Suge took the stage accepting his award, saying, “Any artist out there that want to be an artist and stay a star, and don’t have to worry about the executive producer trying to be all in the videos, all on the record, dancing… come to Death Row!”

P Diddy is known for inserting his ad-libs and appearing in his artists’ music videos.

10. Reese Witherspoon vs. Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton

America’s sweetheart threw some light shade at Kim Kardashian during the 2011 MTV Awards.

She accepted a Generation Award for Water for Elephants and, in the midst of her speech, decided to go in on reality stars, “I get it, girls, that it’s cool to be a bad girl,” the Legally Blonde actor said.

“But it is possible to make it in Hollywood without doing a reality show,” she added. “When I came up in this business, if you made a sex tape, you were embarrassed, and you hid it under your bed.”

“And if you took naked pictures of yourself on your cellphone, you hide your face, people!” the mom of two cautioned. “Hide your face!”

The dig is clearly in the past, as Witherspoon and Kardashian are on good terms.

The Big Little Lies actor said the reality star actually reached out to her before dressing up as Elle Woods from Legally Blonde for Halloween.
