Anthony Joshua admits he’s ‘f***ing fired up’ and wants Tyson Fury fight ‘now’

Anthony Joshua is "f***ing fired up" and believes he’s proven he’s got the engine to go full throttle with Tyson Fury.

But the question now is if it is right to drive straight into an all-British showdown with the unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion. Joshua, 33, got back to winning ways with his points win over Jermaine Franklin to hand the Michigan man his second career loss.

There were glimpses of the best ‘AJ’ but he also still seemed to fight within himself as he cruised to a 118-111, 117-111 and 117-111 win. It was as if he still had the handbrake on.

Maybe it was intentional to ensure his tank didn’t empty as he got through the 12 rounds with seemingly plenty left in it despite being at his career heaviest.

That was the impressive part. Joshua boxed well, worked his jab and landed rights but he didn’t put the shots together to put away the rugged and tireless American.

It still left questions. He took some big shots to show his chin has resilience but he was also hesitant at times. The debate goes on if he’s ready for Fury, with new trainer Derrick James suggesting they need to work together a little longer before such a challenge.

Joshua is not so concerned. “One of the big issues with me personally was stamina,” said Joshua. "In terms of Tyson Fury, would I need more time? Not necessarily because I have the time now.

“Coming off a 12-round fight, with that training behind me, we managed to build from here up to here. It’s a great place to be. 12 rounds isn’t a bad thing if you have a big task like Tyson Fury, who is also a 12 round fighter.

"The confidence remains the same. But one thing that I am more confident about is my conditioning. I’ll be able to concentrate.

“How did I manage to lose the fight with [Oleksandr] Usyk? In the ninth, the 10, the 11th, the 12th. In the last stretch you can lose a fight. I don’t want to make that mistake again.”

He plans on getting back to work with James in Texas in just two weeks' time. “The sooner the better if I’m honest," Joshua continued. “I need to get better, 100 per cent, I’m hungry, I’m f***ing fired [up].”

To the outsider, the smarter choice would be a rematch with Dillian Whyte this summer. We still don’t know if Fury even wants the fight.

Whyte, who was knocked out by Fury last year, offers enough jeopardy that it would test Joshua and their rivalry would also sell to please promoter Eddie Hearn and broadcaster DAZN.

It would also give Joshua more time to work in Texas with James and get those two defeats by Oleksandr Usyk and the fragility from his loss to Andy Ruiz Jnr out of his system.

Then moving on to Fury, Joe Joyce or Deontay Wilder would make more sense. “You never stop learning,” he added. “In terms of peak? As I said who knows? Who knows where that peak is because getting the win today leads us onto bigger heights for the next one.

“I will have to raise the bar again and that means I will have to peak again for the next fight. By getting through today, the next fight I have, I'll find out if I am flat, if I just can't push myself that bit any more or if I still have a level to go.”

Joshua’s points win over Franklin got him back on the winning road. Now he needs to make sure he picks the right path if he’s to get to the top again.
