CEO Chris Meledandri, who is a creative partner for Shrek studio DreamWorks, told Variety that it is his hope that Mike Meyers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) return for Shrek 5 to reprise their characters.

“We anticipate the cast coming back,” Meledandri said, though he cautioned that it’s still early days and no deals have been signed as of yet. “Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”

Meledandri, who oversaw The Super Mario Bros. Movie, said the situation with Shrek is not that dissimilar to Mario in that the idea is to take “core elements” that audiences love about a property and try to honor those with a new installment.

“Then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that,” Meledandri said about bringing Meyers, Murphy, and Diaz back for a potential Shrek 5.

For his part, Murphy said he would come back for another Shrek movie “in two seconds.” After the success of the Puss in Boots spin-off series, Murphy said he believes Donkey is a funnier character and should get his own spin-off. Meledandri agreed with Murphy in believing Donkey is a strong enough character to support his own movie. “Without question,” he said.

The first Shrek debuted in 2001, with sequels Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek The Third (2007), and Shrek: Forever After (2010) each following three years apart. Holiday specials Shrek the Halls and Scared Shrekless were also released, in 2007 and 2010 respectively.

Shrek 5 was at one point eyeing a 2019 release, but obviously that did not happen.
