A Champions League icon was involved in a horror car crash as his brand new vehicle smashed into a Mercedes.

Ex-Benfica ace Oscar Cardozo ruined his new Toyota Land Cruiser when he slammed it into a classic Merc on Monday. The 39-year-old striker was cruising in his native Paraguay, in the capital Asuncion, when he crashed into the German-made motor.

And it got worse for Cardozo when he pummelled the Toyota into the lamp post whilst trying to avoid more damage, crumpling the bonnet in the process. But luckily, he and the other driver emerged from the wreckage unscathed.

However, Cardozo may be in trouble with authorities as it was revealed that he was driving unlicensed when the incident occurred at approximately 5.45pm, Record reported. The centre-forward took a moment to give fans an update on his condition on Instagram, where he posted: "First of all, I inform everyone that thank God I'm fine, and that the other party involved is fine too, there was only material damage. Thank you all."

The incident happened just a day after he bagged four goals in the first half of Club Libertad's 5-0 win over Cerro Porteno. His final strike of the match was a thunderous penalty which he rifled straight down the middle of the opposition's net.

Cardozo returned to Paraguay in 2017, but had an impressive spell in Europe with Benfica, Trabzonspor and Olympiacos. During his seven-year spell with the Portuguese giants, from 2007 to 2014, he helped them reach two Europa League finals and assisted the club in winning two Primeira Liga trophies.

He was also a mainstay in their side in their regular appearances in the Champions League. Cardozo played a pivotal role in getting Paraguay into their first-ever World Cup quarter-final in 2010, but he went from hero to zero when his penalty miss resulted in the nation getting sent home by Spain, who won the clash 1-0.
