Ahsoka Trailer Brings Back Star Wars Rebels Characters – And Teases Thrawn’s Return
Patience, you must learn, as an Ahsoka Tano fan. As Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy acknowledged, the character — a Togruta from the planet Shili, a Padawan turned Jedi — was first created over 20 years ago by Dave Filoni and George Lucas. After numerous appearances in animation and live-action, she is finally getting the spotlight, and the long-awaited trailer for her solo live-action TV series, titled simply Ahsoka, was unveiled today at the 15th Star Wars Celebration. Watch it below.
Following her appearances in The Mandalorian and The Book Of Boba Fett, the teaser shows Ahsoka (played in live-action by Rosario Dawson) in full lightsaber action. Not only that, we have our first look at Mary Elizabeth Winstead, revealed today to be playing the character Hera Syndulla, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren making their live-action debuts after first appearing in Star Wars: Rebels. There's also our very first look at Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action, a reveal that perhaps got the biggest reaction in the room at the Celebration Stage — albeit, only the back of Thrawn's head, with no casting confirmed yet.
The Ahsoka team were on stage to introduce the trailer, with Kennedy and executive producer Jon Favreau paying tribute to Filoni's genius and his long journey with Star Wars. “It was natural he would make the transition to live action,” Kennedy said. “He has done a spectacular job.” Favreau concurred: “He cares deeply. He poured his heart and soul into it. Dave is unique in that he doesn’t ever squash your inspiration or idea but finds a way to fit it in, to keep it in the tradition that George Lucas started.” Dawson, for her part, said she had “so many pinch me moments” making the show. “Because if this does well, maybe we'll get a second season. It's up to y'all!” she told the 4,500-strong crowd.
Ahsoka debuts on Disney+ in August, with Filoni serving as writer, executive producer and showrunner; we'll be watching very closely, especially as it looks to be feeding into the upcoming cinematic event, also helmed by Filoni.
