The highly anticipated live-action film adaptation of the popular video game series, “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” is finally due out later this year. However, the movie will receive a hybrid, theatrical, and streaming day and date release on October 27. Blumhouse Productions’ Instagram account confirmed the news this week.

The announcement also featured a creepy teaser image for the upcoming film.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie Goes Day & Date For October

This is the fourth Blumhouse Productions film that will receive both a simultaneous day and date release following “Halloween Kills,” “Halloween Ends,” and “Firestarter.” The film will receive a wide theatrical release and stream on NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock.

Blumhouse has had success going day and date with horror films before. “Halloween Kills” opened in October 2021 in theaters and on Peacock to a $49 million opening weekend. The film made $92 million at the domestic box office and $131 million worldwide. One year later, “Halloween Ends” opened with $40 million as a day and date release in theaters and on Peacock to finish with $64 million domestically and $104 million worldwide.

Granted, the “Halloween” sequels had the “Halloween” franchise brand name to back it up, plus the original film’s star, Jamie Lee Curtis, was also back for the new trilogy. The 2022 “Firestarter” remake did not fare quite well at the box office and, with a day and date release, bombed out at $15 million worldwide.

While day and date releases can arguably cannibalize the box office for a major theatrical release, Deadline notes that “Halloween Ends” not only scored a solid opening weekend but also topped the Nielsen charts for its opening weekend from October 14-16, with 717 million minutes viewed for the film.

Also, Blumhouse Productions has proven to do well in the horror field. The studio got off 2023 to a strong start with the new original horror IP, “M3GAN,” which went on to make $95 million domestically and $176 million worldwide. Last year’s “The Black Phone” also did incredibly well, earning $90 million domestically and $161 million worldwide.

The “Five Nights at Freddy’s” game series, created by Scott Cawthon, first debuted in 2014. Set in a creepy fictional family pizza restaurant called “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza,” players usually assume the role of a night-time employee and defend themselves against the evil animatronic characters inhabiting the restaurant. Players can uncover a dark, disturbing history behind the restaurant and the animatronic creatures throughout the game.

Throughout the years, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and become an entire media franchise. However, there has never been a live-action theatrical movie until now. The film follows a troubled security guard who starts working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. During his first night on the job, he realizes it won’t be as easy as it looks.

The film stars Josh Hutcherson (“Future Man,” “The Hunger Games”), Elizabeth Lail (“You”), Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Matthew Lillard (“Scream,” “Scooby-Doo”). It’s directed by Emma Tammi (“The Wind,” “Blood Moon”) with a script co-written by Cawthon, Tammi, and Seth Cuddeback. It will also feature animatronic characters created by the iconic Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Cawthon is producing the film along with Blumhouse Production’s Jason Blum.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” opens in theaters and on Peacock on October 27.
