What will it take for the Cowboys to select RB in first round?

Cowboys’ Stephen Jones explained Dallas is not opposed to drafting an RB in the first round, but he must be a long-term piece.

“If you’re taking a player in the top half, you’re hoping you’ve got a player who is going to be here for 10 years,” Jones said in a Tuesday news conference.

Per a 2022 NCAA study, the average RB career is approximately 41 regular-season games, the fourth-shortest among all positions, making them a first-round gamble.

But is it worth it if a team selects the best RB prospect in 10 years?

Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema predicts the Cowboys might select that rare player with the 26th pick, Texas’ Bijan Robinson.

“He’s one of the best RB prospects I’ve seen over the past 10-plus years. He changes everything for your offense,” an NFL executive told The Score NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.

Robinson validated the praise in three seasons. He rushed for 3,410 yards, averaged 6.3 yards per carry, scored 41 TDs and won the 2022 Doak Walker award.

Although Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott are solid, each has concerns.

Pollard, an impending free agent, broke his left fibula in a divisional-round loss against San Francisco. After having surgery, he will be ready for training camp, per ESPN’s Todd Archer, but may need time to regain his burst.

Elliott averaged a career-low 3.8 yards per carry last season and will probably have to take a pay cut. However, Dallas must reduce his role if he stays but keeps regressing.

If Robinson proves he has exceptional value, Dallas should place him atop its draft board.
