Alison Hammond defended by celebs as she apologises for theatre-gate controversy

Alison Hammond has received support from her fellow celebs following her comments about theatre-goers singing along at shows.

Host Alison came under fire after Friday's (April 7) This Morning, when she debated whether or not it's acceptable for members of the audience to sing along at the theatre.

During the chat with co-host Dermot O'Leary and guest Vanessa Feltz, Alison claimed she would be "devastated" if she had to stop singing during a performance.

During the discussion Alison said: "[Theatre staff] are regularly walking up and down the aisles before the performance and during the interval with 'no singing' signs' I mean, I can't believe it, I'd be devastated".

    "I had no idea the level of disruption audiences were causing and tried to make light of the topic on Wednesday’s show, and for that I’m truly sorry.

    "I am a great supporter of theatre and the arts and would never sing at the top of my lungs at any performance, I was wrong in what I said and I’ve given this a lot of thought over the past few days and believe I was wrong.

    "On Thursday evening I attended a performance of the GBBO the musical which I absolutely loved and gave a standing ovation, theatre is a magical experience for me and my family."

    Many of her celeb friends welcomed her apology, including Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham and Loose Women star Denise Welch.

    Hannah wrote: "….And you very much do use your platform for good my friend. Always. Love you for this. Utter class. Sending you a squeeze. HX".

    Denise simply said "Love you," with three red heart emojis.

    Comedian Katherine Ryan said: "ANYONE's problem with Alison Hammond WILL BE PERSONALLY SOLVED BY ME. Let the nation's sweetheart have a laugh, FFS she's not going to ruin a musical, she's here to be the light of our otherwise miserable lives.

    Despite this some stars, including Arlene Phillips, continued to slam the star.

    The Strictly judge claimed Alison has "no idea" and said the situation was "distressing".

    Just two days after her comments, police were called to the theatre after a performance was stopped twice after a two audience members were dragged out after refusing to stop singing.
