Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm debuted the latest trailer for the upcoming fifth installment of the “Indiana Jones” film franchise, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” during the Star Wars Celebration in London. The convention kicked off with the stars and filmmakers of the film taking the stage to reveal the never-before-seen trailer and an exclusive look at the film, along with a new poster release.

At Star Wars Celebration were cast members Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who portrays Helena Shaw in the film, Mads Mikkelsen, director/co-writer James Mangold, and producer Kathleen Kennedy. Along with the trailer, they presented a video message from star Harrison Ford, who revealed new details about the upcoming sequel.

The film marks Ford’s final adventure as Indiana Jones, as he takes up the fedora and whip one last time. It’s set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 before its theatrical release on June 30.

The newly released trailer provides a better semblance of the plot. In the new film, it looks like an older Professor Jones is getting ready to retire. However, his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, is searching for a mysterious item, a dial, that might have the power of time travel. The deal was an obsession of Helena’s father and drove him insane.

It looks like Jones gets wrapped up in the search as well, along with some other sinister characters. Mikkelsen portrays Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi scientist who wants to use the dial to correct Adolf Hitler’s mistakes during World War II. And now, Indy is going on one last globe-trotting adventure to find the Dial of Destiny and stop the bad guys.

The film will likely contain flashback scenes set during World War II with a younger Indiana Jones, still played by Ford but with digital de-aging makeup.

Ford is back as the hero archaeologist, Indiana Jones. He stars opposite Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, who is back as Sallah from the first and third movies, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mikkelsen. Mangold (“The Wolverine,” “Logan”) co-writes and directs the film. Kennedy is producing the film alongside her husband Frank Marshall, Simon Emanuel, and original creators Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored every theatrical Indy adventure since “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” will compose the score again.

The last “Indiana Jones” film directed by Steven Spielberg was the fourth installment, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” It was released in May 2008. The film was a box office success, grossing $317 million domestically and $790 million worldwide. It was not one of the more beloved “Indy” sequels, scoring only 78% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ford finally appears as the iconic cinematic hero when “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” rides into theaters on June 30. However, while Ford is retiring from yet another major franchise, he’s joining another big one.

He’s set to portray President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in “Captain America: New World Order,” due out on May 3, 2024. Fans can read more about Ford’s new role by clicking here.
