Snooker icon Jimmy White has long held a renown for his party lifestyle, featuring at the centre of a long list of outlandish stories from his tumultuous career.

And a new book by White's former manager, Harvey Lisberg, has shed new light on some of the Whirlwind's wildest moments. One incident recounted in 'I'm Into Something Good: My Life Managing 10cc, Herman's Hermits and Many More' saw the snooker ace lock his own friend out of their hotel room so he could shack up with a fan who had come to attend his exhibition.

"[My wife Carole and I] were in the room next to Jimmy," read an extract from the book. "At 2.30 in the morning we were woken by the most horrendous racket coming from the corridor. Someone was banging on our door, shouting for us to open up.

"'You'd better go and see what's going on,' said Carole, so I fell out of bed and opened the door. It was Mad Martin. He was one of Jimmy's friends, and he was sharing a room with him. 'He won't let me in,' he shouted. 'He won't let me in and I'm stuck out here. What am I going to do?'"

Lisberg – who also managed footballers and helped found rock band 10cc – did his best to calm down the aptly named 'Mad Martin'. And the talent agent was soon forced to dip into his own pocket to soothe the situation.

"As I spoke, I heard an almighty cacophony coming from Jimmy's room," the passage continued. "It sounded like the bed was banging against the wall, and there were all sorts of shouts and cries. Jimmy obviously had company.

"I thought it might be prudent not to disturb him. 'Hold on Martin,' I said, 'I'll get you another room.' I went back in to get changed, putting my suit on over my pyjamas. All the while the commotion continued next door. 'I told you he'd end up with her,' said Carole."

White was Lisberg's first investment in the snooker world, but his stable of stars soon grew to include the likes of Alex Higgins, Willie Thorne, Tony Knowles, John Virgo and David Taylor. It was a time when snooker players were more akin to rock stars than the talent of today, but Lisberg had left that life behind by the mid-1980s.

The wild times as White's manager didn't stop at that midnight interruption, however, as Lisberg once revealed he had to track the star down to a holiday park after a bender. “What I found was like a scene from The Hangover," he wrote.

“I opened the door to find bodies on the floor, bodies on the beds, clothes everywhere, empty bottles and cans all over the place. There were at least eight people in there and it was like a pigsty. That was just the first room. I couldn’t see Jimmy, so I stumbled over the carnage into the next room, where there were yet more bodies. And there was Jimmy, out cold."
