New Arrivals for HBO Max April 2023

245HBO Max has got quite an exciting lineup for April 2023. HBO premiered the fourth and final ongoing season of Succession in March and will be doing the exact same this month with Barry Season 4. The highly anticipated revival of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s cult MTV series Clone High is coming to HBO Max this month too. Furthermore, all eyes are on the new HBO Max original limited series Love & Death starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons. Following the show’s premiere at this year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival, most if not all buzz surrounding Love & Death pointed to this being a super hot contender in the upcoming 2023 Emmy season. Based on an unlikely true crime story, this HBO Max original is surely going to be one of the most talked about new shows of April 2023.

There’s more to unpack on HBO Max in April 2023, including the Titans Season 4 mid-season premiere, the new animated series Fired on Mars starring Pete Davidson, and the special docu-series Warner Bros. 100 Years which celebrates the landmark century anniversary of the iconic movie studio. The critically-acclaimed musical documentary Moonage Daydream from director Brett Morgen makes its streaming debut this month as well. An out-of-body exploration into the life of the one and only David Bowie featuring never-before-seen footage and performances, Moonage Daydream was praised for blurring the line between documentary and musical experience. HBO Max subscribers in April 2023 can also stream must-see masterpieces like Henry Selick’s Coraline, Bong Joon-ho’s The Host, and the underrated 2019 war drama Monos from Colombian filmmaker Alejandro Landes. Of course, laugh-out-loud comedies like The House Bunny and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby can’t be forgotten too.

Our Recs:

Clone High

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s adult animated series Clone High is back by popular demand. Fans can expect more high school drama with everyone’s favorite cloned teen versions of history’s greatest figures. Will Forte as Abe Lincoln, Nicole Sullivan as Joan of Arc, Donald Faison as George Washington Carver, Judah Miller as Scan Grade, Phil Lord as Principal Scudworth, and Chris Miller as JFK/Mr. B all bring back their vocal talents for the HBO Max revival. Clone High Season 2 will additionally introduce Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as Harriet Tubman, Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) as Confucius, Jana Schmieding (Reservation Dogs) as Sacagawea, Vicci Martinez (Orange Is the New Black) as Frida Kahlo, Neil Casey (Big Mouth) as Topher Bus (Christopher Columbus), and Sam Richardson (The Afterparty) as Wesley.

Replacing voice actress Christa Miller as Cleopatra is Iranian-American comedian Mitra Jouhari (Three Busy Debras). In case it wasn’t already obvious, Ghandi voiced by Michael McDonald will not be returning as the cultural controversy surrounding the character is what got the show originally canceled. But fans should fear not of that happening again as Clone High Season 3 is already ordered at HBO Max, meaning that this first batch of new episodes is just the beginning. As all the clones are unthawed from their frozen 20-year stasis from prom night, who knows what more good old-fashioned adolescent hijinks they’ll find themselves in? The first season of Clone High can be currently found on Paramout+ for those interested.Clone High Season 2 premieres on HBO Max April 14, 2023!

Barry: Season 4

HBO’s Emmy-winning dark comedy series reaches its conclusion in Barry Season 4. Things looked like they were over for Barry Berkman at the end of Season 3 with the hitman finally in police custody, but series creators Alec Berg and Bill Hader seem to have one more trick up their sleeves. All 8 episodes of Barry Season 4 are directed by Hader himself, with the titular character seemingly spending most of the final season from inside his prison cell.

While Barry loses his mind in the slammer, the many people he left behind in the outside world begin to spiral in his absence. Viewers get to mainly see this with his girlfriend Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg) and fan-favorite mobster NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan), who both commit murder for the first time. Obviously, the final season of Barry wouldn’t be complete without Stephen Root as the backstabbing Monroe Fuches and Henry Winkler as acting coach Gene Cousineau.Barry Season 4 kicks off on HBO Max April 16, 2023!

Love & Death

Love & Death is the latest true crime adaptation to hit streaming, although the star duo of Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons give this series a cutting sharp edge. Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland) and written by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies), Love & Death follows the true story of Candy Montgomery, a devout Christian housewife who is soon accused of the ax murder of fellow church member Betty Gore in 1980s Wylie, Texas. After having an affair with Betty’s husband Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons), all roads lead to Candy being guilty. But Love & Death is much more than your average true crime drama, it seeks to dive into the psyche of a quiet faithful community and uncover what kind of sinister thoughts boil underneath when left unchecked.

Elizabeth Olsen, in her first non-Marvel role since 2018, and Jesse Plemons are joined by an electric cast ensemble that features the likes of Krysten Ritter, Lily Rabe, Patrick Fugit, Elizabeth Marvel, Tom Pelphrey, Beth Broderick, and Keir Gilchrist. Judging from early reactions, Love & Death could go far in the limited series category at the 2023 Primetime Emmys. Could Elizabeth Olsen have yet another shot at glory after being nominated for WandaVision in 2021? Tune in to the three-episode premiere of Love & Death on HBO Max this April to find out. Love & Death debuts on HBO Max April 27, 2023!

Leaving HBO Max in April 2023

Sadly, the list of titles leaving HBO Max in April 2023 is jam-packed with beloved gems. The LEGO Batman Movie directed by Chris McKay is leaving HBO Max just shortly after his horror comedy Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular servant, debuts in theaters this April. Ridley Scott’s epic medieval drama The Last Duel led by Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver, and Ben Affleck has garnered more love since its 2021 release and sees the famed director firing on all cylinders, making it a worthwhile watch before it expires from the streamer this month. James Wan’s cult horror film Malignant is another tragic departure that subscribers will have no choice but to cope with.

If that wasn’t already enough, Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-nominated noir Nightmare Alley is leaving at the end of the month as well. More popular films set to expire from HBO Max in April 2023 include Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights, David Fincher’s Se7en, and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. Those who just saw the incredible Creed III in theaters will want to take note that both Creed and Creed II are being removed from the platform too. Additionally, now’s the time to re-watch I Am Legend before it leaves as I Am Legend 2 with Will Smith is now confirmed to be in the works. There’s way more ground to cover, so check out the full list of everything leaving HBO Max in April 2023 below and make sure to update those last-chance watch lists.
