Paul O’Grady’s cause of death confirmed after star died ‘unexpectedly but peacefully’

Late TV legend Paul O'Grady died from a cardiac arrest, his death certificate has revealed.

The 67-year-old died from sudden cardiac arrhythmia which was linked to his coronary heart disease, the Express has reported.

The telly favourite, famed for his alter-ego Lily Savage and working on Radio 2 and ITV’s For The Love of Dogs, died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on March 28.

The news was confirmed by his husband Andre Portasio who stated that Paul had died at the age of 67.

Andre wrote last month: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.

    While he worked with Battersea shelter for his TV show, at his own home he had a large brood of dogs too – and many more.

    Paul was the proud owner of five dogs when he passed, alongside chickens, sheep, pigs, alpacas and goats.

    His pal and colleague Malcolm Prince revealed that on his final day Paul was “laughing and smiling” and was “surrounded by his beloved dogs”.

    Malcolm said of Paul at the time: “We have lost a unique talent – and I've lost a dear friend. We were all lucky to have Paul in our lives. My heart goes out to Andre, Paul's family, and friends.

    "Oh how I'll miss him.”

    Paul found fame in the ‘90s with his drag queen persona Lily Savage and later appeared on popular shows including For The Love of Dogs and Blankety Blank.

    Paul's final episodes of For The Love of Dogs are currently airing on ITV after the broadcaster made the decision to still air the 11th series of the show as planned.

    It will be his final TV appearance as the new series plays out while Paul visits staff and dogs at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
