A loose horse caused chaos in the Grand National as a jockey was sent flying over the fence in dramatic scenes at Aintree.

Saturday's race was not without drama as animal rights activists and protestors got onto the track and caused a delay to proceedings which saw the start of the race pushed back. Once the race did get underway, favourite Corach Rambler claimed victory ridden by Derek Fox and trained by Lucinda Russell.

However, there was chaos earlier in the race after a loose horse wreaked havoc at the ninth fence in dramatic scenes at Aintree.

Three loose horses had been seen bolting towards the hurdle alongside the field, before two ploughed through a fence and off the coure.

Cloudy Glen, which had also unseated jockey Charlie Deutsch, stopped just short of the fence and turned as the onrushing horses approached the hurdle.

That prompted a collision with Lifetime Ambition as it jumped to clear the fence, causing jockey Sean O'Keeffe to be sent into the air and over the fence.

The dramatic scenes came after the start of the race had been delayed by animal rights activists, following threats they would protest all week.

After protestors stormed onto the racecourse at Aintree, the race was delayed indefinitely before ultimately getting underway later than originally scheduled.

The delayed start did not appear to get to pre-race favourite Corach Rambler, who went off at 8/1 and finished two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of runner-up Vanillier.

Gaillard Du Mesnil finished in third place under Paul Townend, with last year's winner Noble Yeats finishing a further place back in fourth.

Winning jockey Fox told ITV Racing after his victory: "He is just a phenomenal horse. I can't believe it. He normally gets his head up a wee bit but today he travelled everywhere. He is the cleverest horse. He is so intelligent."

The win was his second in the Grand National, having previously won the race on board One For Arthur back in 2017.
