A university student has become the youngest winning owner in the history of the Grand National following Corach Rambler's emphatic victory at Aintree on Saturday.

21-year-old Cameron Sword, who is a third year business student at Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University, paid £4,000 to purchase part-ownership of the two-time Cheltenham Festival winner a couple of years ago.

The 8-1 favourite, ridden by Derek Fox for Scottish trainer Lucinda Russell, crossed the line several lengths ahead of the pack having charged into the lead after clearing the final fence, earning each of his seven owners – who call themselves The Ramblers (hardy har har) – a share of the £500,000 prize money.

Explaining his bold investment in an interview with The Telegraph, Sword said: "Sport was the only thing during Covid and after I’d watched Cheltenham and Aintree I started asking about local trainers.

"I got in touch with Lucinda Russell and Scu (Peter Scudamore, the trainer’s partner) who are 20 miles away and asked them how it all worked. The last thing I thought I’d do was end up actually owning a horse. Eventually Lucinda said she had bought this horse for £17,000 which might be a good starter horse.

"We didn’t expect much, at the time he was very shy, hadn’t come out of his shell and it was £4,000 a share with the bills split seven ways between us."

He said when the nine-year-old won at Cheltenham they presumed that was as good as it was likely to get – if only they knew how wrong they were about to be.

"We really hadn’t expected to be here now with two Festival wins and the Grand National coming up." he added. "We’re shocked. It’s a complete underdog story."

The previous record for youngest winning owner was held by Bryan Borrough who was 23 when his horse, Corbiere, won the National in 1983.
