Liverpool warned of ‘difficult transfer summer’ after pulling out of Jude Bellingham deal

Mark Lawrenson believes Liverpool face a ‘tricky’ summer transfer window after pulling out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham.

A move for the Borussia Dortmund and England sensation had looked on the cards. But with the Bundesliga side demanding over £100 million to do a deal, the Reds have cooled their interest.

Anfield legend Lawrenson reckons Jurgen Klopp could now scour the free agent market as he looks to bolster his midfield ranks and save some cash. "It's tricky but that’s part of being a manager,” said Lawrenson, speaking on behalf of Paddy Power.

"They’ll have a whole raft of names in terms of recruitment. I think they’ll just go for midfielders because they've got cover at the back and that’s not a major, major issue. It might even be that he goes for free transfers, which he’s done before, that would be the clever thing to do.

"They’ll have a list. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. If push comes to shove, I think FSG would come up with some more money but not £100m for Bellingham with the wages on top.

"That might bring the club down, you just don’t know. It could get all messy. The club’s really, really well run, and I think it has to be that way."

Liverpool have struggled to find their groove this season after a gruelling 2021/22 campaign. Klopp's men secured a hard fought 2-2 draw with title-chasing Arsenal last weekend.

However, the Reds had found themselves two down on home soil after just 28 minutes. Lawrenson, a five-time title winner with Liverpool, has warned fans not to expect a stunning turnaround in form.

"They can’t change and they won’t change now until the end of the season,” he added. It’s just really, really difficult to look at them and think, ‘can they win five games in a row?’ The way they are at the moment, you’d have to say no.

"They’re nearly all fit now and Luis Diaz was on the bench last week. They should kick on, but I’d never want to back them because they let you down all the time defensively. They were 2-0 down in no time and couldn’t lay a glove on Arsenal."
