Ethan Coen Has A New Film Drive-Away Dolls, And It’s Arriving Later This Year

For decades, the Coen Brothers were one of the most consistently brilliant directing duos – and while they haven’t made a film together since 2018’s anthology Western The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, they’ve since been exploring a few solo projects. First up came Joel Coen’s stark, black-and-white take on The Tragedy Of Macbeth. And now, it’s Ethan’s turn to go it alone after last year's documentary Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble In Mind – he has a new narrative film coming out later this year, titled Drive-Away Dolls.

The film is a road-trip comedy, with Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan (dynamite in both Blockers and The Broken Hearts Gallery) in the driving seat – they play pals who venture on a trip together after one of them suffers a break-up with her girlfriend. Along the way, they cross paths with criminals that send their trip off in another direction. Coen has assembled a great cast for this one – also featuring Pedro Pascal, Beanie Feldstein, Matt Damon, Colman Domingo and Bill Camp. Coen co-wrote the screenplay with Tricia Cooke.

Best of all, there’s not too long to wait – the film is hitting US screens on 22 September, and hopefully won’t be delayed on this side of the Atlantic. Even if there is a wait, it should hopefully end up on the festival circuit too. Now, when will the director dream-team get back together?
