New images and details about Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series, The Rings of Power, have emerged ahead of the show’s premiere in September. Specifically, we’ve gotten a new look at iconic Middle-earth characters Celebrimbor and Galadriel and learned a little bit more about them.

Speaking to Empire, showrunner JD Payne said Sauron is one of Middle-earth’s greatest villains. A central character in Sauron’s rise to power is Celebrimbor, the elven smith who was manipulated into helping create the Rings of Power.

“We’re excited to be bringing him to Middle-earth. He’s very mysterious,” Payne said.

Celebrimbor is played by Charles Edwards (The Crown) in The Rings of Power. While the character wasn’t seen in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, he did appear in the video games Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.

Celebrimbor and Sauron are mixed up in some dark and mysterious things, and The Rings of Power will not shy away from darkness in spirit and tone.

“It takes you to the steps of Cirith Ungol and the lair of Shelob, where friends are betraying each other and characters are being dragged into Mordor,” Payne said. “It’s a harrowing experience you go through. But in the end, there’s always a star in the sky that says, ‘Keep going.’ We wanted to find that spirit in this series.”

Another iconic Middle-earth character set to appear in The Rings of Power is Galadriel, who will be played by Morfydd Clark (Pride & Prejudice and Zombies). She told Empire that making The Rings of Power was like “being on a school trip” in that she got lessons in swimming, riding, and climbing.

Cate Blanchett played Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings, but Clark is now taking over in a younger incarnation of the character who still has a lot to learn.

“I had to find that balance between someone who has got an element of the eternal but hasn’t yet seen it all. Don’t expect the same character that you meet later on,” Clark said. “Galadriel is legendary. Cate Blanchett as Galadriel was legendary. Tolkien himself is legendary!”

The Rings of Power premieres September 2 on Prime Video, and the showrunners already have five seasons mapped out. It is not the only Lord of the Rings project currently in the works, as a new animated film, The War of the Rohirrim, releases in 2024. Additionally, the video game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum releases on September 1.
