The Foo Fighters have released their first song and announced their first album following the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins.

The band announced that the 50-year-old drummer had passed away on Twitter last March. “The Foo Fighters family Is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” the band wrote in a brief statement.

“His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

Although the band has previously announced that they will be playing at different festivals this summer, they revealed that they will be revealing new music while on the road.

The band’s 11th album – and the first following the death of the beloved drummer Taylor Hawkins – will be released on June 2, so fans don’t have to wait long to hear new music from the band. The new album, titled “But Here We Are” will share ten tracks that focus on the emotions surrounding the deaths of not only Hawkins but frontman Dave Grohl’s mother, Virginia Grohl.

The band described the album as a “brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters endured over the last year” in a press release (via Entertainment Weekly), adding that the new songs will “run the emotional gamut from rage and sorrow to serenity and acceptance, and myriad points in between.”

The band also released the first song on the LP, “Rescued,” on Wednesday. The single contains lyrics like “It came in a flash / It came out of nowhere / It happened so fast / And then it was over” and has been compared to songs like 2005’s “In Your Honor” and 2011’s “Walk.”

The Foo Fighters declined to state whether or not the work left behind by the late Hawkins was used to create any of the new music.

The new album, produced by both Greg Kurstin and the Foo Fighters, is said to be a “testament to the healing powers of music, friendship, and family” and became as “therapeutic as it was about a continuation of life” for the band, from the press release. Taylor Hawkins Passed Away During A Tour Stop In Bogotá, Colombia In March 2022

Taylor Hawkins passed away in March 2022 at 2022 after being found unresponsive in his hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia. A urine toxicology test found at least 10 different drugs in his system at the time of his death, as per Newsweek.

A few days after his passing, the Foo Fighters took to Twitter to announce that they were pulling out of all previous tour dates to “grieve” and “heal.” They write, “It is with great sadness that Foo Fighters confirm the cancellation of all upcoming tour dates in light of the staggering loss of our brother Taylor Hawkins.”

“We’re sorry for and share in the disappointment that we won’t be seeing one another as planned,” they continued. “Instead, let’s take this time to grieve, to heal, to pull our loved ones close, and to appreciate all the music and memories we’ve made together.

Later in the year, the Foo Fighters organized a series of tribute concerts for the late drummer, featuring talents ranging from Miley Cyrus to Kesha. At the first of two tribute concerts in London, Grohl opened the show with a touching speech.

“Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we’ve gathered here to celebrate the life, the music, and the love of our dear friend, our bandmate, our brother Taylor Hawkins,” he said per Entertainment Weekly. “For those of you who knew him personally, you know that no one else could make you smile or laugh or dance or sing like he could. And for those of you that admired him from afar, I’m sure you’ve all felt the same thing.”

“So tonight, we’ve gathered with family and his closest friends, his musical heroes and greatest inspirations, to bring you a gigantic f—ing night for a gigantic f—ing person,” Grohl continued. “So, sing. And dance. And laugh. And cry and f—ing scream and make some f—ing noise so he can hear us right now.”
