Arsenal fans fear Prem title charge is ‘over’ as Gunners are held to draw by Southampton

Arsenal's title hopes have suffered a massive blow as Southampton held the Gunners to a point in London.

Aaron Ramsdale's howler – within 30 seconds – silenced the Emirates Stadium, as Carlos Alcaraz slammed the ball into an empty net. And the Gunners' evening got even worse as Theo Walcott rolled back the years to double the Saints' advantage.

Arsenal did manage to pull one goal back – through Gabriel Martinelli – but Southampton held strong in the second period, even netting a third through Duje Caleta-Car. However, the Gunners dug deep through Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, but fans are still fearing the worst.

One fan tweeted, with a heartbroken emoji: "How disheartening to watch ur title hopes getting snatched away. Oh Arsenal…"

"After being elite for 30 games Arsenal throw away the title in three games… absolute joke… Man City are going to slap Arsenal… give Man City the title man," another admitted. And a third tweeted: "Spineless man, just handed them [Man City] the title on a silver platter."

"Diabolical. People blame Holding etc but if this team is held together by Saliba alone then it's not a title-winning team, plain and simple," a fourth added. While another fumed: "There’s losing a title, and then there is bottling it. We have 100% without a shadow of a doubt bottled it."

Arsenal are still top of the table, five points clear of Pep Guardiola's side – but City have two games in hand over the Gunners, and the two sides still have to meet at the Etihad Stadium.

City's next game in the Premier League will see the Gunners make the trip up north to Manchester, with the title, effectively, on the line. City have hit form at the perfect moment, and their last loss was way back at the start of February.

However, the Gunners have a lifeline, and if they win the clash they will put the destiny of the Premier League title in their own hands. A loss, however, will see City close the gap to one point with two games in hand.

Gunners fans can take credit in their side showing the steel of champions as Leandro Trossard rattled the bar in the 92nd minute, as the Emirates found its voice again.

Reiss Nelson squandered a glorious chance as the Gunners started to snatch at chances, with the Saints dropping deeper and deeper. Arsenal continued to create more chances, with Southampton the ropes, but the Saints were saved by the whsitle.

The draw suited neither side, with the Saints still battling for survival, while the Gunners saw their hand loosen on the title.
