Madison Beer Recalls Suicide Attempt And Experience With Sexual Abuse

Madison Beer is sharing details of her traumatic past.

The American singer gained popularity on YouTube for her song covers and was later signed to Epic Records. Having been in the public eye for several years, her latest interview shed light on some of the more challenging aspects of her life.

Madison Beer Opens Up About Her Past Struggles With Suicidal Thoughts And Sexual Abuse

The songwriter opened up about some of the most challenging moments in her life during a recent appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. She shared her struggles with the public exposure of her nude photos and videos and her suicide attempt.

When the “Melodies” singer was just 15 years old, she had to deal with her nude video being leaked online, spreading like wildfire. Despite trying to move on, the incident left a lasting impact on her, and while speaking about it on the podcast, she shared how unforgettable the memory was and still affects her to this day.

The “Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)” singer said, “It’s remained so vividly to the point where I still, to this day, if I get a call in the middle of the night, I’m 15 again,” adding, “And I’m in my room, and I’m finding out that this video is out there and it’s terrifying.”

She revealed that some of the leaked videos and photos of her were taken when she was just 13 or 14 years old. According to the 24-year-old, she sent the videos to a boy she liked, traveling between Los Angeles and her hometown. She also suspected the boy was using an app to record the Snapchat videos she sent him. The “Life Support” singer explained:

“I just didn’t think the person I was sending this stuff to would remotely ever think to do something like that because this was someone I’d known my whole life. I was wrong.”

The “Todrick” star shared that she experienced sexual abuse when she was six or seven. Although she refused to reveal the identity of her abuser and the nature of their relationship, the remainder of that event, coupled with her privacy being invaded, pushed her into a dark place.

By 2019, the burden of bearing all those traumatic events led her to start hurting herself and having suicidal thoughts. She said, “I started self-harming again, which I’ve been clean for a while,” before revealing that she attempted suicide twice but was grateful it was unsuccessful.

Beer disclosed that she was only 16 years old during her first attempt, which she recalled in her upcoming memoir, “The Half of It.” In an excerpt obtained by PEOPLE from her new memoir, she recounted how she stood on her balcony and considered jumping off. The actress shared:

“I don’t think I would have jumped. It was more about knowing that I could — that I had a way out if it became too much. Still, I lingered there for a long while, chilled by the fact that I wasn’t all that scared of being up so high.”

She added that her little brother found her, screamed for their parents, and as she climbed back over, she was confused why they were so in shock because thinking about it had become customary to her.

‘Louder Than Words’ Actress Takes Aim At Record Label

The “Hollywood Medium With Tyler Henry” guest star has collaborated with and been signed by multiple record labels throughout her career, so it is unclear which title she was shading. Although she is currently signed to Epic Records, some companies she has worked with are Island Records, AWAL, and First Access Entertainment.

While her single, “Reckless,” was a massive hit with over 11 million views on YouTube, The Blast shared that she felt they could do more to propel her career to new heights. Beer expressed her frustration in a now-deleted tweet that read, “I h8 my l**** so much.” A sympathetic fan replied, “Trust me, baby we do too.”

The “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” guest judge then elaborated on her issue: “They do NOTHING to support me or promote me or ANYTHING.” She also disclosed that she had to finance most of the “Reckless” music video herself as they did not support her vision, adding to her frustration.
