Charlize Theron shared a sly reaction to her new role in the MCU after she appeared as Clea in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and her response has fans excited to her future in the franchise. The highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange and follow-up to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in theaters this weekend to a slightly divisive if overall positive response. In Marvel’s latest offering, Doctor Strange is sent on a mind-bending journey to protect America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who hunts her down in order to take her power to travel through the multiverse.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has 2 credits scenes, the first of which unveiled a brand-new MCU character. Strange was approached on the street by Clea (Theron), a purple-clad enchantress who traveled from the Dark Dimension to ask Strange to help with an incursion that he caused. Viewers last saw the Dark Dimension on-screen in Doctor Strange, when the sorcerer outsmarted Dormammu in a time-loop to protect his world. Clea, the niece of Dormammu in the comics, appeared to Strange through a portal to her home dimension requesting his help with incursions. After assuring Clea that he wasn’t afraid to tackle the task, Strange and his new third eye followed Clea through the portal into what will surely shape up to be another multiversal adventure.
Theron shared a post on Instagram of herself in a purple dress – a color that Clea can be seen rocking in the Doctor Strange 2 post-credits scene – and the comments are filled with fans excited to see what’s next for the character. After captioning the post “Cat’s out of the bag,” Theron’s comments were flooded with reactions from celebrities and fans. Chelsea Handler said, “That is something else, baby,” while Octavia Spencer dropped in some flame emojis. Fans also took to the comments expressing their excitement for Doctor Strange 3 and any future appearances by Theron in the MCU. Check out the post below:

The appearance of Clea fits in with the popular theory that the MCU’s next big team-up will be following Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars storyline. The introduction of the multiverse in Marvel projects such as Loki, What If…?, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness seems to have been hinting towards a multiversal war with Kang the Conquerer. Since it’s still early days, it’s unclear when and where Theron will appear in the MCU again. The actress technically hasn’t commented on her role as Clea in any official capacity and she likely won’t for the time being as Marvel waits for fans to see the movie before spoiling the big surprise.
Of course, the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness post-credits scene seems to directly set up the inevitable Doctor Strange 3. Although the sequel hasn’t been announced yet, it seems more than likely that Cumberbatch will be returning in the future, both for another solo film and more cameo appearances. Additionally, Theron’s future in the MCU seems bright. Marvel wouldn’t hire an actress of her caliber unless they planned on utilizing her talents in epic fashion. Watching Theron and Cumberbatch go toe-to-toe with the creatures of the Dark Dimension is an exciting prospect and it’s clear that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is just the beginning for Theron and Clea.
