16 Stories From Actors Revealing Times Directors Crossed The Line On Set To Get The Perfect Take

For a long time, directors have been known to push boundaries to get the perfect take, and are often praised for being able to get the right performance out of an actor.

However, sometimes directors they can take their craft too far and, in turn, create an unsafe, inappropriate environment for their actors.

So with that in mind, here are some of the stories about directors’ questionable behaviors while working with actors:

1. Stanley Kubrick’s intense directing style took a toll on actor Shelley Duvall during the filming of The Shining.

The reshoots that occurred on the set of 2017’s Justice League have become infamous for the drama going on behind the scenes between the cast and director Joss Whedon. Actor Ray Fisher called out Whedon’s abusive behavior, and Wonder Woman actor Gal Gadot corroborated this. Following disagreements about the character, Whedon allegedly told Gadot to shut up and say the lines he wrote because he could make her look stupid, threatening to make her career miserable if she didn’t.

3. Aubrey Plaza was allegedly instructed to actually masturbate on camera while filming a scene for The To-Do List.

Despite working well together on The Fighter, Russell’s behavior toward Adams was vastly different on American Hustle. A leaked Sony email revealed Russell “so abused” Adams on set that costar Christian Bale stepped in to defend her. Adams has spoken about being “devastated” about the experience, not wanting to take her experience home to her daughter or work with Russell again anytime soon.

5. Tippi Hedren was allegedly attacked by live birds while filming The Birds.

There’s a scene in Last Tango in Paris where Marlon Brando’s character sexually assaulted Maria Schneider’s character using butter as a lubricant. This scene was allegedly not in the script, and she was only told about the addition right before it was filmed. In 2007, Schneider, who was 19 at the time of filming, stated, “During the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn’t real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated, and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by [director Bernardo] Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn’t console me or apologize. Thankfully, there was just one take.”

7. Björk allegedly faced sexual harassment from director Lars von Trier while filming Dancer in the Dark.

In a Facebook post, famous singer/songwriter Björk detailed her experience working with her director in one of her few ventures into acting. She described how Lars von Trier would wrap his arms around her and stroke her for minutes at a time between takes and angrily broke a chair when she told him to stop. She also wrote about his unwanted whispered sexual offers, at one point threatening to climb onto her balcony.

8. Léa Seydoux was allegedly told to hit her costar in the face for real while filming Blue is the Warmest Color.

During an altercation scene between Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos in Blue is the Warmest Color, director Abdellatif Kechiche would yell, “Hit her! Hit her again!” Seydoux would then hit Exarchopoulos for real. While filming the same scene, Exarchopoulos cut herself and began bleeding, but Kechiche allegedly told them: “No, we’re not finished. We’re doing it again.”

9. Robert Downey Jr. was allegedly not allowed to take bathroom breaks on the set of David Fincher’s Zodiac.

In the documentary, Side by Side, Fincher detailed how annoyed Downey was by Fincher sometimes not letting actors use the bathroom as he needed to get many takes. He said, “He actually left mason jars of urine on the set, like over in the corner. He’d pee and bring it back as a form of protest.”

10. William Friedkin had the propmaster fire live guns on the set of The Exorcist.

In a Reddit AMA, Friedkin revealed that he would instruct the propmaster to fire blanks to get a surprised reaction from Ellen Burstyn. He used this method to make the fear as authentic as possible.

11. And speaking of firearms, Werner Herzog held actor Klaus Kinski at gunpoint while filming Aguirre, the Wrath of God.

Herzog once directed a documentary called My Best Fiend, which detailed his tumultuous relationship with infamously hotheaded German actor Klaus Kinski. At one point, Herzog allegedly became so frustrated that he pulled a gun on Kinski and told him he would kill him and then himself if he left the set. 

12. David O. Russell called Lily Tomlin a “cunt” on the set of I Heart Huckabees.

In an interview with Playboy, George Clooney detailed his horrifying experience working with Russell during Three Kings. He allegedly witnessed the director pushing an extra to the ground and insulting him. When Clooney stepped in to defend the extra, he and Russell got into a physical altercation.

14. Darren Aronofsky used real explosives near actors on the set of Noah.

While filming the biblical epic, Aronofsky and his team created real explosions, and allegedly did takes without practice. In a profile for the New Yorker, it was stated that Emma Watson was worried about one explosive going off 10 feet away from her, so she asked, “Can we practice this?” to which the director allegedly responded, “There is no practice.”

15. Herbert Ross allegedly was cruel to Julia Roberts while filming Steel Magnolias.

Costar Shirley MacLaine said director Herbert Ross went after Roberts with a vengeance, telling her to cut off a mole she had under her eye. She said Roberts “would come to my house every night and say, ‘I think I’m terrible. What am I doing?’ and she really was in tears.”

16. And finally, Quentin Tarantino made Uma Thurman perform an car stunt without a stunt double in Kill Bill.

Thurman wanted a stunt driver to perform it, but Tarantino assured her it was safe. She ended up crashing the car into a tree, getting a concussion and knee damage as a result. Tarantino later commented on the incident, telling Deadline, “It’s the biggest regret of my life, getting her to do that stunt.”
