15 Of The Most “Yikes” Red Carpet Moments In The History Of Hollywood

Award shows’ red carpets are ostensibly all about fashion — but really, that’s not true at all. They’re actually all about drama.

E!

Over the years, there have been a looooot of questionable celebrity moments which occurred on the red carpet. Here are 15 of the best, most unhinged moments that’ll live on in our memories forever.

2. An interviewer handcuffed herself to Hugh Grant but didn’t have a key.

Steve Granitz / WireImageAt the 2007 premiere of Music and Lyrics, a TV presenter and apparent Hugh Grant mega-fan handcuffed herself to the actor, then revealed that she didn’t have a key. He had to stay attached to her for ten minutes until firefighters arrived to cut him free. She ended up spending two hours in jail.

3. Joan Rivers absolutely roasted Nicole Kidman’s outfit choice.

At the 1997 Oscars, Joan Rivers didn’t hold back. During the red carpet interviews, she spotted Nicole Kidman coming her way wearing a chartreuse gown, and yelled to her: “Nicole! Come tell me why you wore such an ugly color!” When Nic ignored her and walked straight past, Joan continued, “I hate that color! You are making me puke!”

For what it’s worth, that dress has been immortalized on many “Best Oscars Dresses of All Time” lists and was labeled “the first time anybody had worn haute couture to the Oscars with real conviction” by Vogue. It’s even got its own Wikipedia page.

4. An interviewer told Rashida Jones that she was looking very “tan and tropical.”

While walking the red carpet for the 2015 SAG awards, Rashida Jones was complimented by a well-meaning, but very off-base, TNT reporter.  “You look like you’ve just come off an island or something. You’re very tan, very tropical,” the interviewer told the actress. Without missing a beat, Rashida replied: “I mean, you know, I’m ethnic.”

5. Zac Efron dropped a condom at the premiere of a kid’s movie.

While posing for photos on the orange carpet of The Lorax premiere, Zac Efron pulled his hands out of his pocket, causing something to fall out. He quickly stooped down to pick it up, but watching the video back, you can see it’s a condom.

He later told Matt Lauer: “I never really had a pocket-checking policy when I was going on the red carpet before, but now we’ve fully instated one.”

6. Taylor Swift was asked about all the men she’d be taking home after the Grammys.

On the 2015 Grammy’s red carpet, an ET reporter told the camera to get a good close-up on Taylor’s legs, before telling the star: “You’re going to walk home with more than a trophy tonight, I think, lots of men.” Though you can tell she’s offended and shocked at the comment — remember, this is at the peak “Taylor Swift is a maneater” discourse — she kept her cool. “I’m not going to walk away with any men tonight,” she replied, adding, “men get me in trouble”.

7. Giuliana Rancic asked Issa Rae about her memoir.

E! presenter, Giuliana Rancic, thought she was asking a fairly standard interview question when she asked Issa Rae, “If you were to write a memoir, what would the name be?” But Guiliana seemingly didn’t realize that Issa published her NYT-bestselling memoir, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, in 2015.

8. A reporter groped Scarlett Johansson mid-interview.

At the 2006 Golden Globes, ScarJo was being interviewed for E! by Isaac Mizrahi, who asked her if she was wearing a bra. When she said that it was all built into the dress, he went in for a big squeeze of her boob just to check. He later apologized, but it’s worth noting that on the same night, he asked Eva Longoria if she’d shaved “down there.”

9. Amy Schumer laid down in front of Kimye but they just stepped over her.

At the Time 100 Ceremony in 2015, comedian Amy Schumer did a fake fall-down in front of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West while they were posing on the red carpet. The couple barely reacted, just edged around her, and moved on. Later, Amy told Jimmy Kimmel that she did it because red carpets are “stupid” and “humiliating,” and that Kanye looked at her from above like he wanted her to die.

10. John Travolta went in to kiss Scarlett Johannsen but she clearly was not keen for it.

She later said there was nothing weird about it at all, adding that it was “totally sweet and totally welcome”…but the photo really speaks for itself.

11. The Dictator, aka Sacha Baron Cohen, dumped ashes on an unsuspecting Ryan Seacrest.

When Sacha Baron Cohen rocked up to the 2012 Oscars in his outfit from The Dictator, we all knew that some kind of hijinks were inevitable. It wasn’t a massive surprise when he dumped a whole urn of ashes onto Ryan Seacrest, but you can tell the presenter was MAD about it.

12. Angelina Jolie smooched her brother on the Oscars red carpet.

Angelina has had some very memorable red carpet moments — the blood vials, the leg-split dress — but nothing will top when she fully kissed her brother James Haven while posing for photos in 2000. He later told Daily Mail that it wasn’t a thing — “it was something simple and lovely” — but those photos will live on forever.

13. Will Smith slapped a reporter who tried to kiss him.

The 2022 Oscars wasn’t the first time Will Smith was involved in a high-profile slap. Back in 2003, at a Men In Black premiere, a reporter came in for a hug and a cheek kiss. Will embraced him back, but when he tried to plant a mouth kiss on the actor, Will pushed him away and lightly slapped his cheek. Turns out the reporter was Ukranian prankster, Vitalii Sediuk, who’s tried to pull a lot of these stunts over the years.

14. Debra Messing slammed E! for not paying their staff equally.

In 2017, E! host Catt Sadler resigned after learning that her male cohost was earning double her salary for several years. A couple of months later, during an interview with E! on the Golden Globes red carpet, Debra Messing had something to say about it. While chatting with Giuliana Rancic, she said: “I was shocked to hear that E! doesn’t believe in paying their female co-hosts the same as their male cohosts. I miss Catt Sadler.”

15. Mayim Bialik was asked how many people mistakenly think she’s a genius…even though she’s literally a neuroscientist.

TNT / Via youtu.be

Mayim Bialik plays a genius on The Big Bang Theory, which is why a reporter at the SAG awards asked her: “How many people think that you can solve calculus at the drop of a hat?” The thing is — Mayim actually can solve complex calculus. She kept it polite, replying “I actually trained in calculus for several years, I’m a neuroscientist, you may not have known that.”

16. And finally, Cara Delevingne hyped up Megan Thee Stallion in a weird and cringy way.

Cara Delevingne made headlines after the Billboard Awards in 2022, when she walked the red carpet with Megan Thee Stallion. First, the model was making strange faces and lurking behind Megan in photos. Then, she jumped into frame to hold the end of Megan’s dress. The weird energy continued during the show, to the point where Meg uploaded a photo that Cara had clearly been cropped out of.
