Taika Waititi is one my absolute favorite directors.
The Orchard /Courtesy Everett CollectionWell, the trailer for his next movie dropped, and it looks amazing! Next Goal Wins is based on a 2014 documentary about Thomas Rongen, a Dutch-American soccer coach, who went to American Samoa to train their team (one of the worst in the world).
Searchlight PicturesLast year, Taika told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s about underdogs, and I just love underdog stories. Most of my films are about people who live on the margins, or are a little bit left out, and it just fit right in for me. It’s a true story, but it’s got all the elements that all the great sports films have. It’s basically the Cool Runnings of soccer.”
Judging by the trailer, this film has plenty of Taika’s signature humor that makes his movies so special.
