Sima Aunty Just Broke The Fourth Wall And Explained Why “Indian Matchmaking” Has A 0% Successful Match Rate

Sima Aunty is back for another round of matchmaking in Season 3 of Netflix’s Indian Matchmaking, out now. While the reception of the show itself is split, there’s one thing that’s objectively clear: The show has a 0% successful match rate. And Sima Aunty doesn’t deny it.

While some love Indian Matchmaking as another one of reality TV’s dating shows, others criticize it for reinforcing casteist stereotypes and whitewashing arranged marriages — especially as Netflix’s description for the show calls it an “inside look at the custom in a modern era.”

In a recent interview with Suchin Mehrotra for the Hindustan Times, Sima Aunty talked about the show’s success rate (or lack thereof), her take on what her millennial clients want in a partner, and whether or not she felt her female clients were “more impressive” than her male clients.

While those who watch the show have no problem calling out Sima Aunty’s matchmaking process…

Sima Aunty’s ideal client is someone who will marry anything that moves

…they also recognize that she can only do so much with what she’s got.

so the indian man is upset that the matchmaker was setting him up with an Indian woman (which is what he requested) who is “too indian” and he didn’t like that she had an accent. like what the fuck?????? the internalised racism is crazy here #IndianMatchmaking

I see exactly why Vikash is single. My goodness. Namrata was a nice girl. So was Anjali. One didn’t speak Hindi so you said no but the other one did and now she’s TOO Indian? Please please please. #IndianMatchmaking

During the interview, when asked about her clients’ expectations — particularly regarding past comments about younger people today being “more confused about what they want” — Sima Aunty told the Hindustan Times, “The youth dreams a lot. They want everything in one person. I just tell them that they won’t get everything.”

Netflix

She then explained that people need to be more realistic, as you won’t be able to find someone who suits 100% of your criteria in the real world. “If you get 60-70%, you should be happy,” she remarked. “Two people have to make that 100% together.”

Netflix

Beyond the general expectations of today’s “youth,” Suchin asked Sima Aunty if she agreed with a pattern he and many viewers have noticed about her clients: The women on the show are typically accomplished and successful, while the men on the show are often unimpressive and seemingly confused.

Indian Matchmaking is my favorite show because Sima Aunty has a horrendous batting average and seemingly exists to match beautiful, successful women with men who look like sausages, and then harangue said women for having standards like “makes me laugh”

The girls on Indian Matchmaking just be like “I want a husband who is nice to me and who won’t make me want to vomit during sex” and sima aunty is like “y’all kids and your FUCKING demands, don’t piss me off!”

All through Indian Matchmaking I couldn’t help but notice, while the women were looking for a mate for themselves, the men were looking for a wife for their parents.

— Ray Stings (@Purba_Ray) April 25, 2023

in Indian matchmaking sima is always telling the woman to settle and adjust and not focus on physical attraction but Vikash is rejecting people bec they don’t speak the brand of white washed New Jersey accent Hindi bec what if she actually has an Indian accent

— badass cutie ???(evil) (@lilcosmicowgirl) April 24, 2023

No but why is the end of every season of #IndianMatchmaking so funny ??You’re 35 years old and you beatbox on YouTube and your mommy has to find you a WIFE?!?!? With SWAG???? Sir.

Perhaps predictably, Sima Aunty did not agree, calling both the men and women on her show impressive. Regardless of gender, she told Suchin she finds every person to be different and that her job is simply to help them. “If they’re confused, I guide them,” she said. “I treat them all like my sons and daughters.”

Netflix

As for the show’s 0% successful match rate, Sima Aunty broke the fourth wall and revealed that Netflix only wanted to depict the process of Indian matchmaking in the show. “In five months do you think it’s possible that everyone will get married? No. It would be a miracle,” she commented.

If you’re curious to find out what happened to the clients from Season 1, find out here.

“You have to understand, this is a reality show,” she said. However, if it wasn’t a reality show, Sima Aunty is confident she could have matched all eight couples. Ultimately, she emphasized that the purpose of the show was to give a glimpse into the process and nothing more.

Netflix

Nevertheless, Sima Aunty is aware that she and the show have received criticism, but she welcomes it. “The show becomes popular with both responses, negative and positive. That is the beauty of this show,” she said. “And everyone has their own right to an opinion.”

Netflix

In the end, Sima Aunty reflected on how the success of Indian Matchmaking — the show, not the match rate — has completely changed her life and allowed her to pursue new things, from more shows to brand endorsements. And for any new opportunities that may come her way next, “I’ll happily do it,” she said.
