Coronation Cost & Who Pays?: King Charles’ Coronation Will Cost a LOT of Money

Critics of the royal family will definitely not be happy when they learn the cost of King Charles’ Coronation, though it could have been even more expensive.

Around 2,000 VIP guests are expected to attend the ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Saturday morning (May 6) in London, England.

While 2,000 may seem like a lot of guests, that’s only a quarter of the amount of VIP guests who attended Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

Despite there being less guests and a shorter ceremony, the event is expected to cost a lot more money than the late Queen’s coronation if you adjust the cost for inflation.

So, how much will the coronation cost? And who will pay?

Keep reading to find out more…

BBC estimates that the event will cost “between £50 million and £100 million ($63-125 million).”

The late queen’s coronation cost £50 million in today’s money, which is the low end of the range for Charles’ coronation.

Buckingham Palace is expected to contribute a sum of money for the coronation, but the rest will be footed by the U.K. government and the British taxpayers. The biggest cost to the taxpayers will be the lost productivity from the public holiday on May 8, which is estimated to be £1.36 billion.

There’s one very famous person who is NOT attending the coronation.
