‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Reaches $1 Billion Globally, Tops Box Office Yet Again

It seems all Nintendo and Illumination can do is triumph with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” The beloved CG-animated movie topped the box office again for a fourth weekend. Deadline reports that the film brought in another $40 million over the weekend, bringing its current domestic total to $490 million. On top of that, the film is topping the $1 billion mark on Sunday (Apr. 30).

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Passes Magical $1 Billion Mark.

The film’s fourth weekend was the best performance at the box office for an animated picture. It is also the fourth-best weekend ever at the box office for a film released by studio Universal Pictures, who should be over the moon with these results. The film decreased only 33% from last weekend’s box office take, so its holds since its extended opening weekend have been remarkable.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” in its fourth weekend of release, is still staving off new competition at the box office. Recent films that entered the marketplace over the weekend include Lionsgate’s “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” and “Sisu.” Those films opened at No. 3 with $6.8 million and No. 10 with $3.25 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, Sony’s new biopic on boxing legend George Foreman, “Big George Foreman,” failed to ignite any fires at the box office. The film opened in 3,054 theaters but only managed $3 million for its opening weekend, coming in at No. 11. The film failed to even rank in the box office Top 10.

While “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has been riding high at the box office all this month, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will likely swoop in and kick the film off its No. 1 slot throne starting next weekend. However, considering the vital box office holds for the Nintendo-based movie, it should continue doing well on last weekends. With the film on the cusp of making $490 million domestically, it has a ct chance of surpassing $600 million domestically and al.5 billion worldwide.

Elsewhere, Sony’s reboot of the “Evil Dead” horror film franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” had a decent second frame. The film held onto its No. 2 slot this weekend, bringing in another $12.2 million. That brings its domestic total to $44.4 million. With its second weekend performance, the film appears to be pulling ahead of its 2013 predecessor, “Evil Dead,” which finished at $54 million domestically. “Evil Dead Rise” seems to have a strong chance of finishing even higher.

Next weekend will be Marvel’s next chance at bat with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” There’s been a lot of negativity and criticism surrounding Marvel Studios after “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” underperformed at the box office and performed poorly with critics. So far, the film has a 78% rating with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s not as bad as the 47% for “Quantumania,” but if that number holds, it’s not as good as the 85% for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and the 92% for the first film. However, Rotten Tomatoes scores don’t always determine audience reception and box office. Case in point, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” currently has a “Rotten” Critics score of 59%, but it’s now the most popular movie in the world and the biggest movie of the year.

It will be interesting to see if “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and writer-director James Gunn can turn the conversation around for Marvel Studios next weekend.
