Coronation Concert in full – BBC name blunder, Lionel Richie voice change and fan fury

The Coronation Concert for King Charles III kicked off on Sunday night (May 7) with performances from huge celebs including Katy Perry, Paloma Faith and Take That.

But the star-studded event was also riddled with malfunctions and blunders, with fans left fuming at more than one stage in the evening.

From Lionel Richie sounding ‘unrecognisable’ as he performed his greatest hits to James Nesbitt left in complete awkward silence as he was supposed to read aloud, there was plenty for royal fans to get their teeth stuck into.

    TV and radio presenter Kirsty Young was left red-faced just minutes into the proceedings as she struggled to pronounce Nicole Scherzinger’s name.

    When King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived Kirsty said: "There of course we see the arrival of their Majesties the King and Queen.

    “There is not very much that could upstage Nicole Sherginer,” she stumbled, before giggling: “You know who I mean!”

    Fans couldn’t cope with the blunder, as one social media user joked: “Did she say I can't even say, Nicole Scherzinger? She just did. Lol.”

    “Not the presenter pronouncing Nicole Scherzinger's name so horribly,” another echoed.

    While another said: “Nicole Scherzinger or whatever her name is, dear me what a mess."

    Mike Tindall rocking out

    I'm A Celeb favourite Mike Tindall had all eyes on him and wife Zara as he rocked out to tunes at the concert – waving his Union Jack flag high in the air.

    The former rugby player, who many viewed as the breakout star of the concert, could be seen singing along with wife Zara Tindall to Steve Winwood's hit Higher Love during the concert, before appearing on screen once more during Lionel Richie's set.

    Many fans went wild as the cameras focused on him, with one commenting: "Mike Tindall singing his heart out to Steve Winwood is the highlight so far."

    "Anyone else wanting Mike Tindall to put his tie round his head?" asked a second, followed by a laughing emoji.

    Viewers weren’t too impressed by the line-up of stars at the concert – with some comparing it to a night at Butlins.

    Despite the appearance of stars like Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Take That, it was difficult to impress the jaded audience back home, and they soon took to social media to fume over the A-listers on offer.

    One fan said: “This Coronation concert line-up sounds like a line-up from Butlins in Skegness.”

    As someone else fumed: “It’s always Take That or Olly Murs on these things! CBA! Watching The Chase instead.”

    A third viewer said: “Just seen the line-up for the #CoronationConcert and I’ve gone ‘who?’ for half of them!”

    “Must be my age, the line-up for the Coronation concert looks pants,” another echoed.

    Dad jokes

    The Prince of Wales made a heart-warming tribute to his dad, the King as he introduced tonight’s Coronation Concert, saying: “Pa, we are all so proud of you.”

    But before that he also made a toe-curling dad-joke, making TV viewers cringe and giggle at the same time in the classic way that only a dad can.

    As the distinctly merry good-natured crowd waited for star attraction Lionel Richie, William promised his speech wouldn't go on “all night long”.

    Virgin Radio’s Rich Williams one of several dozen who observed on Twitter that William was really “nailing the dad joke there”.

    Actor James Nesbitt was left red-faced as he suffered an awkward minute of silence as the cameras switched to him – with him set to make a speech about lights coming on across the country.

    Instead, the crowd began cheering and James looked into the camera as though awaiting his cue – though it had already come and gone.

    Fans took to social media to comment on the blunder, with one writing: "I don't think James Nesbitt realised he was on then!" alongside a laughing face emoji.

    Another penned: "Oh poor #JamesNesbitt guessing his mic failed, hence cut away and then suddenly a hand mic."

    A third wrote: "Oh that was awkward! James Nesbitt getting cold feet."

    In one sweet standout moment from the concert, Princess Charlotte could be seen reaching out for help from her mum Kate Middleton.

    In the live video clip, Charlotte seemingly had an issue with her bracelet, and turned to ask Kate for help.

    While her brother Prince George refused to help, turning his head away, Kate came to her daughter's rescue and helped her with the bracelet.

    One fan of the show mocked the stereotypical brother-sister relationship, and said: "Typical brother, just looks away."

    Another one said: "George was like 'oh, too bad, anyway…' And looks away!"

    With Kermit and Miss Piggy on hand to provide some comic relief – and to flirt with King Charles – Camilla reportedly wasn't impressed.

    She could be seen looking unhappy as Miss Piggy joked about tying the knot with the new monarch, and Daily Star had a body language expert on hand to provide her critique.

    Adrianne Carter, better known as The Face Whisperer, explained: "Camilla is very much a straight player with her facial expressions and her facial expressions say ‘not funny’ for the muppets.

    “When she does smile it looks forced rather than genuine…"
