People are only just learning the meaning behind the H symbols on lampposts

The yellow signs with a bold letter H in the middle are a common sight on lampposts across the UK – but not many people know what it stands for.

Many people have wondered if it marks a spot where helicopters can land – but that's actually far from the truth.

Thankfully, the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have explained what they really mean so that members of the public don't have to ponder over it anymore.

And apparently, it's nothing to do with tiny "helicopter pads" as some people joked, but the 'H' actually stands for "hydrant" – and the signs denote where fire hydrants are located.

And in another video, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service also explained what the numbers on the yellow signs mean, as they said the top number denotes the width of the hydrant in millimetres, while the number on the bottom shows the distance of the cover from the sign in metres.

Commenters on the video were blown away, as many said they were only just discovering the meaning behind the signs.

"I never knew. Every day is a school day thank you," one person wrote in the comments.

While another added: "Well, I learnt something new today. Thank you!"

A third added: "I've never even seen one of these signs never mind know what it means."

And a fourth commented: "Good to know. Thank you for sharing."

But there were some jokers in the comments who claimed they had always assumed the signs were supposed to be tiny helicopter landing pads.

Someone posted: "I used to think it was H for helicopter landing."

As someone else agreed, writing: "I thought it was a helicopter landing pad."
