‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Delays Production Due To WGA Strike

Fans will have to wait a little longer than originally anticipated for the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things.” Creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed that the production start of the new season has been delayed due to the ongoing dispute between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong

Production Delayed On ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Due To Ongoing WGA Strike

The striking creators shared their solidarity with the WGA on social media. In a statement on their joint Twitter account for the series, the Duffers wrote, “Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix sources indicated that the production start for the expected epic fifth season of “Stranger Things,” which will conclude the juggernaut show, will be delayed to a new time. The WGA went on strike earlier this month, and the guild is seeking viewership transparency from streaming platforms, increased wage floor, along with protections against mini-rooms, and utilization of artificial intelligence.

Amid the strike, a number of scripted shows have been shut down, due to the lack of showrunners and/or writers on set or picketing workers. THR notes that the Apple TV+ series “Loot” saw some disruption last week when striking writers were picketing the mega-mansion in Bel-Air that is used to film the series. Other TV and film productions have also seen their starts delayed or put on pause due to the strike, such as Marvel’s “Blade” reboot. Late-night talk shows and “Saturday Night Live” have also been shut down as a result of the strike.

Previously, the Duffers started working on Season 5 of “Stranger Things” last August, about a month after the debut of Season 4, Volume 2. They also revealed that Season 5, Episode 1 will be titled “Chapter One: The Crawl.”

“Stranger Things” first debuted on Netflix in July 2016. Season 2 debuted in October 2017, followed by Season 3 in July 2019. Season 4 was split into two parts and debuted with Volume 1 in May 2022, followed by Volume 2 in July 2022. So, there will now be a longer wait than originally expected for the final season.

Besides Season 5, the Duffers were working on a new animated series spinoff for the show that was announced last month. They are executive producing their show via their Upside Down Pictures banner with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via 21 Laps and Eric Robles via Flying Bark Productions. The Duffer brothers are currently working under an overall deal with Netflix that was signed before the WGA strike.

“Stranger Things” stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, and Sadie Sink. Both the animated spinoff and “Stranger Things” Season 5 will debut on Netflix later on. Seasons 1-4 of “Stranger Things” are available now on the streamer.
