‘Di Canio was a f***ing loony – he called me two days into my holiday and I s*** myself’

Ex-Swindon Town defender Paul Caddis has explained how a message from his then new boss Paolo Di Canio caused him to 's***' himself and cancel his holiday early.

Following a disappointing 2010/11 season, which saw Swindon relegated to League Two, Caddis was enjoying some rest and relaxation out in Spain, when he received a call from the club.

The message the Scotsman, who came through the ranks at Celtic, received was fromt their new manager. Ex-West Ham star Di Canio, wanted all his players to return to the club for an early start to pre-season, something which did not go down well with Caddis.

With nine days left in Santa Ponsa, Caddis was reluctant to return but ultimately relented, returning for what he called "the hardest" pre-season he had ever done.

Of course, the decision to return would pay off. Swindon immediately bounced back to League One by winning League Two with ease.

And while he certainly considered disobeying the fiery Italian's pre-season return request, Caddis admitted to the Undr The Cosh podcast that he "s***" himself due to Di Canio's stature within football.

"Say no more, the guy [Di Canio] was a f***ing loony man," said Caddis. "The first year he come in, I was in Santa Ponsa and I got phone call from the secretary saying 'you're training in two days'. [This was] before we'd met him.

"Nobody had met him. [I said] no I'm not, I've got nine days left. [They said] 'nah, the manager wants everyone in'. And I eventually went home and I'm glad I did because as his record showed, if you cross him, you're finished. So I knew if I didn't go in, that would have been me finished.

"Everyone went in. I think because of who he was to start with, like we didn't know anything about him, we thought Paolo Di Canio, big name – we're going to respect him. We're League Two, who are we to tell Di Canio no.

"So we all turned up and he's turned up wearing his shades looking a million dollars, and then for that day of pre-season, oh my God, it's the hardest I've ever done. Well, the two hardest that I've ever done – that and the following year with him.

"It did cross my mind [to not come back from holiday] but I'll be honest, I s**t myself."
