Watford legend Troy Deeney was thinking ‘holy f***’ seconds before iconic play-off goal

When people think about the greatest goals of all time, you could forgive them for not thinking about one of Troy Deeney's Watford strikes.

However, if they were to watch the former Hornets striker's goal from 2013 against Leicester City, they might have their minds changed forever.

Late on in injury time in the Championship play-off semifinal, Leicester won a penalty through Anthony Knockaert, who dived to win the spot-kick.

However, a brilliant double save from Manuel Almunia sent Watford haring down the other end in search of a winner.

And astonishingly, they did just that when Jonathan Hogg nodded down a Fernando Forestieri cross into the path of Deeney, who blasted the ball home past Kaspar Schmeichel to send Vicarage Road into pandemonium. It was a goal that had a bit of everything.

And speaking on the Happy Hour Podcast, Deeney revealed he thought "holy f***" just seconds before he fired Watford to Wembley back in 2013.

Deeney said: "So Almunia saves it [the penalty], then saves it again and we clear it. And as this ball is being cleared I'm thinking 'holy f***, we've got to do this for another half an hour now.'

"I just see people running past me and if you ever watch it, just watch me, I swear, I don't move for like five seconds because people just run past me. I'm trying to figure out what's happening.

"Then it goes down the line, Ikechi [Anya] plays it down to Fernando Forestieri but I saw Hoggy [Jonathan Hogg] and Hoggy never gets the credit he deserves because Hoggy went from box to box in about four seconds, it's the quickest run you've ever seen.

"And he heads it back but as he headed it back, you know when you watch the matrix and it goes slow-mo, that's how I saw the whole thing.

"So as he's headed it back, it looks really close but I was like 'there's a f*** off gap, just kick it there' because I see Kasper [Schmeichel] there and Vyds' [Matej Vydra] has come in and Vyds is on for a hat-trick so I know he's not leaving it so I went 'f***ing leave it!'

"And he's left it, I shoot, score, top comes off, crowds in and I jumped over the hoardings to my brother, Ellis, who caught me."
