New Arrivals for Netflix May 2023
41Netflix is once again bringing the goods for dedicated subscribers in May 2023. So far in the month, Bridgerton fans have been able to sink their teeth into Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story – a new prequel spin-off show from original creator Shonda Rhimes. Netflix subscribers will soon be able to indulge themselves in new seasons of Queer Eye, the Ultraman anime series, and I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, among others. The star vehicle for the platform this May comes in the Netflix original film The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez. The action drama flick is about an elite assassin who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she was forced to abandon at birth. The Mother comes just in time to kick off the summer movie season on Netflix.
Subscribers who are more into documentaries will also be able to check out Netflix originals like Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me and McGregor Forever. The former is a documentary film that explores the life of its titular icon, Anna Nicole Smith, who went from being a Playboy magazine centerfold and top model in the ’90s to one of Hollywood’s most-known TV personalities in the early 2000s. The latter is a four-part docuseries that follows former UFC champion Connor McGregor as he attempts to make an unlikely return to fighting. After suffering a broken leg during his 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, the Irish mixed martial arts star is looking to prove the skeptics wrong.
New classics on Netflix this month include comedies the Austin Powers trilogy, Starship Troopers, This Is the End, and last year’s A Man Called Otto led by Tom Hanks. In the mood for drama? The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Girl, Interrupted, and Léon: The Professional are available to stream to satisfy those needs. There’s the potential for an Arnold Schwarzenegger triple feature as well, for Conan the Barbarian, Last Action Hero, and Kindergarten Cop all just got added to the platform in May 2023 too. Finally, those excited for Aardman to finally release their long-awaited stop-motion animated sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget on Netflix later this year can watch the first Chicken Run which is now available to stream again.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
Netflix and Shondaland have once again united to bring audiences a new tale from the Bridgerton universe. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a prequel spin-off series that shows young Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power in the British monarchy in the year 1761. The plot goes back and forth between young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) in the first months of her marriage to King George III (Corey Mylchreest) and older Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) in the present Bridgerton timeline in 1817.
When the royal heir Princess Charlotte unexpectedly dies in childbirth in 1817, Queen Charlotte is left with no choice but to now pressure her children to marry and produce another royal heir to ascend the throne. In dealing with this dilemma, the show jumps back in time to Charlotte’s own royal upbringing to shed light on how she also found herself pressured to birth multiple heirs without question by King George’s mother, Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales (Michelle Fairley). Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is only a limited-run series, meaning that fans are going to have to savor all six episodes of this Netflix original while they eagerly wait for Bridgerton Season 3. The Mother
Jennifer Lopez returns to the action genre in The Mother, directed by Niki Caro (2020’s Mulan) and written by Misha Green (Lovecraft Country), Andrea Berloff (The Kitchen), and Peter Craig (Top Gun: Maverick). The story follows an elite assassin who was forced to give up her child at birth, due to the large painted target on her back. After spending years training in solitude, she must come out of hiding when those same sinister forces finally discover the whereabouts of her estranged daughter Zoe (Lucy Paez), who’s now a 12-year-old teen.
The Mother is a classic revenge tale in the vein of John Wick and is the latest female-led Netflix original action flick following favorites like Kate, Gunpowder Milkshake, Black Crab, and The Old Guard. Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Gael García Bernal, Paul Raci, and Jesse Garcia (soon to be seen as the main star in Eva Longoria’s Flamin’ Hot) round up the thrilling cast ensemble. As mentioned earlier, The Mother is only kicking off the summer movie season on Netflix, as subscribers can still look forward to star-studded original films like Extraction 2, They Cloned Tyrone, and Heart of Stone. The Mother hits Netflix on May 12, 2023!
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson: Season 3
Almost two years since the second season premiered on Netflix on July 2021, the popular sketch-comedy show I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson is finally back with its third season. Comedian Tim Robinson guides audiences through a variety of public sketches that explore “the cringe of life’s strangest and most banal situations” as Netflix likes to put it. As always, this season will be six episodes long and will feature a surprising collection of hilarious celebrity guest appearances. Tim Robinson and fellow comedian/writer Zach Kanin created the series with a shared goal: to make viewers laugh their butts off through embarrassing public sketches that do whatever it takes to get the unknowing bystanders to leave. Leaving Netflix in May 2023
The list of films and shows leaving Netflix in May 2023 may be short, but there are still some recognizable titles that subscribers will want to take note of. For starters, the 1998 queer coming-of-age drama Edge of Seventeen (not to be confused with The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld) is leaving the streaming service at the end of the month. Other beloved films saying goodbye on May 31 include Gore Verbinski‘s Oscar-winning animated hit Rango, the cult sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, and the heartbreaking drama Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. Horror fans will probably want to double-feature The Boy and its notorious sequel Brahms: The Boy II before the first film is removed from the platform this May as well.
