New Arrivals for HBO Max May 2023

98HBO Max will be rebranding itself as “Max” in May 2023, and with this name change comes a whole wave of new arrivals. The streaming service will automatically update for subscribers come May 23. Before this facelift (with the platform ditching its well-known purple scheme for a new shade of blue), new original shows like the satirical political drama White House Plumbers, the Cold War thriller Spy/Master, and Season 3 of the fan-favorite comedy series The Other Two will be available to stream. As a bonus, we’ve included that Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be the first major Max premiere on May 23. Even with the name change, Max will continue to be the main streaming destination for all Warner Bros. theatrical releases. This means that subscribers can look forward to films like Evil Dead Rise, The Flash, Barbie, and more eventually hitting Max later this year.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other classic additions to stream on HBO Max in May 2023. New films on the platform this month include Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite, M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable, and James Wan’s The Conjuring. The original Men in Black trilogy starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones is also about to hit the streaming service. Animation fans will want to keep their eyes out for the arrivals of Rick and Morty Season 6 and The LEGO Batman Movie as well. Those more interested in documentaries can look forward to new HBO original productions like Angel City, which is produced by Natalie Portman and follows the origins of the Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team of the same name, and Love to Love You, Donna Summer, which tells the life of the famed titular American singer with never-before-seen home video footage and interviews.

Read more on our monthly recs below and check out the full list of everything coming to HBO Max before the official “Max” rebranding on May 23, 2023. Another notable list of films leaving Max in May 2023 is expected but has not yet been released. Stay tuned to find out which films are leaving the platform this month! But, for now, you can find out what’s new and leaving from Netflix and Disney+ right here on DiscussingFilm.

Our Recs:

White House Plumbers

This five-part HBO limited series tells the story of how two of Richard Nixon’s top political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they were blindly trying to protect. White House Plumbers kicks off in 1971, when Hunt and Liddy, former CIA and FBI, respectively, are first hired by the White House to investigate the Pentagon Papers leak.

After a series of successes and mishaps, the unlikely duo lands on the Committee to Re-Elect the President, which soon leads viewers down the infamous downward spiral of the Watergate scandal. Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux are joined by an electric cast ensemble featuring Lena Headey, Kiernan Shipka, Ike Barinholtz, Yul Vazquez, David Krumholtz, Rich Sommer, Judy Greer, Kim Coates, Liam James, Zoe Levin, Tony Plana, Zak Orth, Nelson Ascencio, Tre Ryder, Gary Cole, Toby Huss, John Carroll Lynch, and Kathleen Turner. Catch new episodes of White House Plumbers every Sunday this May on HBO Max!

The Other Two: Season 3

This beloved comedy series is back after a nearly two-year wait. Created by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider of Saturday Night Live! fame, The Other Two follows the chaotic life of siblings Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Heléne Yorke) as they try to push each other out from living in the shadow of their talk show mogul mother Pat (Molly Shannon) and viral pop star younger teen brother Chase (Case Walker).

In this latest season, Cary is finally finding some work as an aspiring gay actor, meanwhile, Brooke is somewhat satisfied working in the management team of their younger brother, who goes by the stage name of ChaseDreams. Of course, not everything is as positive as it seems with the siblings constantly comparing their less fortunate careers to the high standards of their family name. The Other Two Season 3 also sees the talents of Josh Segarra, Brandon Scott Jones, Wanda Sykes, and Fin Argus in recurring roles. Catch new episodes of The Other Two Season 3 every Thursday this May on HBO Max!

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be ringing in this new phase of HBO Max transitioning into Max in the second half of May 2023. Fans who didn’t get the chance to see the DC blockbuster in theaters will now be able to enjoy the film from the comfort of home. Director David F. Sandberg returns and introduces the formidable three daughters of Atlas; the sympathetic Anthea (Rachel Zegler), the war-hungry Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and the wise Hespera (Helen Mirren). The “Shazamily” – made up of Billy Batson (Asher Angel/Zachary Levi), Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer/Adam Brody), Eugene Choi (Ian Chen/Ross Butler), Pedro Peña (Jovan Armand/ D.J. Cotrona), Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman/Meagan Good), and Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield – are now reluctantly faced with a battle of mythical proportions.

The DC sequel certainly takes the cake for being the most magic-heavy entry in the DCEU (or DCU as it’s now being called), featuring Dragons, Cyclopes, Minotaurs, Harpies, Unicorns, and more by its jam-packed grand finale. Furthermore, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are still to be expected in 2023. Along with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, these four films mark the last titles not originally produced by new DC Studios Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. If that has at all piqued your interest, regarding the current state of the DC film franchise, then perhaps Shazam! Fury of the Gods is worth a watch when it finally hits streaming on Max later this May. Shazam! Fury of the Gods premieres on Max on May 23, 2023!
