Ant and Dec fans reckon they have clocked the real reason the duo have announced a break from their smash hit show Saturday Night Takeaway.

The Geordie faves, whose real names are Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, have fronted the ITV series ever since 2002.

And even though the pair have over 130 episodes including two specials under their belt, on Thursday (May 19) they announced they were quitting the award-winning show.

Leaving the nation gutted Ant and Dec confirmed that their next series, the 20th series, will be their last one “for a little while.”

Following the shock news, fans claimed they had figured out the real reason as to why their favourite TV duo quit.

    “Summit fishy going on here. They prob this morning replacements,” penned someone else.

    A fifth remarked: “Looking forward to seeing @antanddec host This Morning!!!”

    On Thursday both Ant and Dec released statements regarding the news of Saturday Night Takeaway and described it as the "perfect time.”

    Ant said: “We love making Saturday Night Takeaway, but reaching the milestone of 20 series seemed like the perfect time to pause for a little while and catch our breath.”

    While Dec added: “We still have a momentous 20th series to look forward to first so we will do our best to go out (for now) with a bang in 2024!”

    Kevin Lygo, ITV Managing Director, Media and Entertainment, also said: "When you think of Saturday night television you think of Saturday Night Takeaway.

    "Over 20 series the show has become a cultural phenomenon, and while we eagerly anticipate what Ant & Dec have up their sleeves for the 2024 series, we completely understand their desire to take a pause, take stock, and think about what the next incarnation of the show might look like."

    ITV also revealed that the most recent series, which launched in February, had ITV1's biggest overnight audience of the year.
